Brandon Smith made the number nine jersey his own at South Sydney in 2026, establishing himself as a key figure in the Rabbitohs’ forward pack during his first full season at the Club. Across 17 NRL appearances, including 16 starts at hooker, Smith brought his trademark energy, toughness and creativity to the side, scoring three tries and playing an important role in South Sydney’s push into the Finals.
Smith’s attacking influence grew as the season progressed, with all three of his tries coming in the second half of the campaign. He crossed against his former Club, the Melbourne Storm, in round 21 before adding another four-pointer against the Parramatta Eels during Indigenous Round in round 23.
He finished the regular season in style, scoring against the Sydney Roosters in round 27 as the Rabbitohs celebrated an emphatic 50-20 victory at Allianz Stadium.
Beyond his contributions on the scoreboard, Smith provided plenty of spark around the ruck, using his speed and strength out of dummy half to create opportunities for his teammates. His ability to engage defenders and generate momentum through the middle was a valuable asset to South Sydney’s attack throughout the year.
Smith finished the campaign with four try assists, four line-break assists and 871 running metres from dummy half, showcasing his ability to threaten the defensive line while creating space for those around him.
His defensive work was equally important, making 398 tackles across the season and consistently bringing physicality and aggression to the middle of the field.
One of his strongest performances came when it mattered most, in the Elimination Final against the Newcastle Knights at Allianz Stadium. Smith produced a tireless defensive effort, making a season-high 35 tackles in his 170th NRL appearance.
Having established himself as South Sydney’s first-choice hooker, Smith heads into 2027 as an important part of the Rabbitohs’ spine. With another season in the Red and Green under his belt, his combination of experience, creativity and competitiveness will continue to be a major asset for the Club.
