Ashton Ward: 2026 Year in Review
Ashton Ward produced a halfback's coming-of-age season for South Sydney in 2026, stepping up from a six-game rookie introduction into genuine responsibility across 13 NRL appearances.
Ward’s numbers reflected a clear rise in both role and output alone. Ward finished the season with one try and eight goals for 20 points, 10 try assists and 12 line break assists, while making 186 tackles at 82% efficiency. He also kicked 4899 metres at an average of 377 metres a game, forced four drop-outs, and handled 854 receipts with four offloads.
He started the year at halfback in round one against the Dolphins, but the night ended early. Ward suffered a syndesmosis injury that required surgical intervention and was sidelined for up to eight weeks. His return came against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in round 10, helping South Sydney to a classic win at Accor Stadium against the odds.
Against the Brisbane Broncos to honour Jai Arrow’s retirement match in round 15, that craft was on full display. Ward laid on three try assists and two line break assists, ran for 89 metres and kicked for 441 metres as the Rabbitohs powered to a 48-6 victory at Accor Stadium.
In Round 20 against the Raiders, Ward crossed for his first NRL try, converted it himself and finished with four goals for 12 points.
A week later against the Melbourne Storm in round 21, Ward produced another strong organising display. He ran for 91 metres, made 19 tackles, laid on three line break assists and kicked for 474 metres, and his try assist found Campbell Graham for the winning try as South Sydney sealed a 28-26 win.
In July, the Club upgraded Ward to a top 30 contract for the remainder of 2026 and extended him through to the end of the 2028 season, locking in the young halfback for the next two-and-a-half seasons from that mid-year announcement.
A hamstring injury against the Parramatta Eels in round 23 brought his season to an early close. Across those 13 appearances, South Sydney won seven games with Ward at halfback. He produced some of the best games of his NRL career this season, a promising start to his career. The future is bright for Ashton Ward, and Members and fans will be excited to see him progress in 2027.
