USYD Gadigal Centre Open Night Inspires Future First Nations Leaders

On Thursday 12th June, students from schools across Sydney gathered at the University of Sydney for the Gadigal Centre Open Night—an evening dedicated to showcasing the academic pathways, scholarships, and support systems available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students considering tertiary education.

Souths Cares participants from Alexandria Park Community School, Ashcroft High School, Marrickville High School, Miller Technology High School, Liverpool Boys High School, Lurnea High School and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College were warmly welcomed by university staff, student ambassadors, and the Gadigal Centre team.

Jane Stanley, Director, Gadigal Centre

"The Gadigal Open Night is a chance for students to believe that attending university is for them. It's about connecting with the USyd and Gadigal Centre staff to start building relationships and seeing all the support that is available for them at USyd. The partnership with Souths Cares has been wonderful, and we hope that some of the students that attended last week will be studying at USyd with us in the future."

The event provided comprehensive information about entry pathways for 2026 and 2027, including the Gadigal Program—an access and support program specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Attendees learned about scholarship opportunities, on-campus accommodation options, and what university life at USYD looks like, with a strong focus on cultural safety and community.

The highlight of the evening was hearing from two current university students who shared their journeys, offering real insight into what it's like to study at USYD. They also spoke about the invaluable support they’ve received through initiatives like the Mentoring Our Brothers and Sisters (MOBS) Program, tutoring assistance, and the culturally safe spaces offered by the Gadigal Centre.

Rhys Wesser, Mentor

“The students were able to get a great insight of what University of Sydney life offers Indigenous students. The Gadigal Centre and their staff were really accommodating to our students and parents who attended. Many of our students now have further ambition in studying at the prestigious University of Sydney."

The Gadigal Centre is committed to creating a culturally affirming and supportive environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Whether it’s through academic tutoring, mentoring from senior students, or simply providing a place to connect with other students, the Centre plays a pivotal role in the university experience.
