Nine local schools came together on Friday for the Liverpool Opportunity Hub’s annual OzTag Gala Day, held at Hillier Oval in warm conditions. The event brought together students from Ashcroft High School, Busby Public School, Casula High School, Heckenberg Public School, Holsworthy High School, Hoxton Park High School, James Busby High School, Liverpool Boys High School and Miller Technology High School.
Now in its third year, the OzTag Gala Day attracted more than 120 students, making it the largest instalment of the initiative to date.
The competition featured five rounds of fast-paced OzTag, with the top two high school teams advancing to the Grand Final. Ashcroft High School’s junior team claimed victory, defeating Hoxton Park High School 3–2 in highly a competitive and entertaining match.
While the standard of play was impressive, the heart of the day was about much more than sport. The Gala Day focused on promoting teamwork, community, connection and encouraging students to build new friendships across the Liverpool Opportunity Hub network.
The event concluded with an awards presentation, where medals were presented to the winning team and runners-up. Cooper Morris from Casula High School was recognised as the High School MVP, and Shamailah Ghamrawi from Busby Public School received the Primary School MVP award.
Rhys Wesser, Liverpool Opportunity Hub Program CoordinatorIt was great to see so many of our Liverpool Opportunity Hub schools come together at our annual OzTag Gala Day. I loved seeing our students getting active, having fun and most importantly building new connections within their community.
Holsworthy High School student Shelby Whiting said she was proud to represent her school.
“I enjoyed the opportunity to represent my school and play against other local high schools. Although it was competitive out there on the field, it was a great atmosphere and loads of fun”, Shelby said.
Thank you to all the schools, teachers and students who contributed to the success of the 2025 OzTag Gala Day.
