Earlier this week, Souths Cares partnered with GambleAware to deliver a Youth Consultation Workshop aimed at better understanding the impact of gambling and exposure to gambling advertising on young people.
The initiative forms part of Souths Cares’ new Gambling Education Campaign, which will empower Rabbitohs players and Youth Ambassadors to challenge gambling norms within our community. The campaign builds on the South Sydney Rabbitohs’ leadership stance as the first NRL club to partner with Reclaim the Game and decline revenue from sports betting advertising.
The consultation workshop brought together participants from the Souths Cares Deadly Youth Mentoring Program, Nanga Mai Marri (Dream Big) Program, and Liverpool Opportunity Hub.
The session began with GambleAware peer educators Tim Gray and Dean Dries, who shared their lived experiences with gambling and their journeys toward creating positive change in the lives of others impacted by gambling harm.
Participants then engaged in a series of interactive activities, exploring the impact of gambling on young people, the societal influences that promote gambling, and practical strategies and protective factors that support positive alternatives.
Angus Robilliard, Impact and Funding ManagerThroughout the workshop, we saw young people being honest and insightful about the impact of gambling within peer groups, families and communities. We had a great group attend the session who are keen to support our gambling education campaign and lead by example.
Insights gathered from the workshop will help shape the messaging and key themes of the Souths Cares Gambling Education Campaign, which will roll out throughout 2026.
Souths Cares Gambling Education Campaign is proudly supported by GambleAware, which offers a range of resources for anyone seeking information or support.
