Ward Fulfilling an NRL Dream

The young South Sydney playmaker has reflected on fulfilling his NRL dream over recent weeks, emphasising the importance of ball control and completing sets as the Rabbitohs prepare to face Manly at Brookvale.

Seizing the NRL Opportunity

The player described his recent elevation to the NRL side as a dream come true, despite the team dealing with significant injuries to key players. He acknowledged the challenge of stepping up when the side is missing personnel, but emphasised his determination to make the most of every opportunity at the top level.

He explained that returning to New South Wales Cup is always an option, but whenever the chance to play NRL presents itself, it must be seized with both hands. The player has been focused on putting his best foot forward and playing the best football he can for the team.

Ball Control Key to Defensive Improvement

The player identified ball control as the critical issue that has undermined the Rabbitohs' defensive efforts over the past fortnight. He explained that the team has not helped its defence with its attack, with dropped balls coming out of their own end creating pressure that inevitably leads to points being conceded in the modern game.

The solution, he suggested, is straightforward. The team needs to clean up how they handle the ball, and the defence will improve as a result. He noted that teams completing at high rates and forcing opponents to kick long from inside their own twenty is the way the game is being played now, and executing those fundamentals well goes a long way toward getting the job done.

Looking ahead to Thursday's match against Manly at Brookvale, the player reinforced that the focus remains internal rather than on the opposition. The game plan centres on holding onto the ball, completing sets, and being connected and trusting each other defensively.

Building a Partnership with Cody Walker

The player expressed his enjoyment playing in the halves alongside Cody Walker, noting that the partnership is reaching a point where they are developing a strong understanding of each other's preferences. After several games together, he is learning where Walker wants the ball and when he wants it, while Walker is getting to know his preferences in return.

He believes the partnership will continue to strengthen over the coming weeks. When asked whether he has the confidence to overcall Walker when he sees an opportunity, the player was emphatic. He explained that being selected for first grade requires having that confidence, because missing those opportunities can lead to being criticised in video sessions afterward.

The player also discussed the importance of not dwelling on mistakes. He noted that coach Wayne Bennett emphasises not taking your divots with you, meaning if an error is made, the focus must immediately shift to the next job. Bennett has kept things simple for him, encouraging him to stick to his strengths and ensure he is doing those things well.

Cherishing the Opportunity

Reflecting on his NRL debut last year and the try he scored in his early appearances, the player described those moments as unforgettable. He was fortunate enough to get a few games at the back end of the season, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

He expressed deep gratitude to South Sydney for giving him that opportunity, saying he will cherish the Club forever. Now, he feels a responsibility to repay that faith with strong performances, and he is hoping to contribute to a successful back end of the year for the Rabbitohs.
