The South Sydney Rabbitohs are mourning the passing of former Rabbitohs first grade utility forward, Alan ‘Amos’ Burke, who passed away peacefully Thursday morning at Calvary Health Care Kogarah at the age of 78, following a long respiratory illness.
Alan Burke was born on 15 January 1948 in Sydney and played his junior footy in the strong South Sydney Juniors nursery with Alexandria Rovers and Chelsea United. In 1964 he represented Souths in the Jersey Flegg under 17s Cup who defeated St. George in the final 10-4 after extra-time, and in 1967 he represented in the Presidents Cup under 21s competition.
The Rabbitohs graded him for the 1968 season and after four seasons he played in 77 grade games for the club, scoring four tries. He was unfortunate to have played for the Rabbitohs during their third golden era when they had a galaxy of superstars in their ranks, and as a result he managed only one appearance in the top grade – which was against Cronulla-Sutherland in round nine during the 1970 season, when we won our 19th first grade premiership.
The urge to play more first grade games prompted him to leave the Rabbitohs and accept a three-year contract offered by the Balmain Tigers starting in 1972. He played in 43 grade games for the Tigers, which also included seven in first grade and one first grade Wills Cup pre-season game in 1974.

After he retired from playing he successfully coached Alexandria Rovers in different grades for many years and worked with the Australian Customs Department for 35 years. Alan was also an integral part of the Customs Rugby League team which won four first division premierships between 1971-1976 in the NSW Public Service Rugby League competition, which were played at the Sydney Domain. Interestingly, playing alongside Alan in that side were six other South Sydney graded players.
Then later he became the head of the Newcastle Customs Office, and was also selected on a two-year overseas posting in the Seychelles.
Mr Burke was held in high regard by all who knew him. He chose not to have a funeral and is survived by his loving family including his wife, son, sister and grandchildren.
On behalf of everyone connected with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, we offer our deepest and most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr Alan Burke in this most difficult time.
Thanks to Leigh Davies for his contribution.
