Souths Cares Crowned Inaugural Community Connections Cup Champions
Last Friday evening, Souths Cares, in partnership with Randwick City Council and Eastern Beaches Police Area Command, proudly hosted the inaugural Community Connections Cup, an initiative bringing young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls together through sport, culture and community connection.
The event was designed to help break down barriers between young people and police while creating a safe and positive environment that strengthens relationships and builds a sense of community, connection and belonging.
Four teams took to the field representing local organisations, including Weave Cool Kids, La Perouse Bummers, PCYC and Souths Cares.
The Souths Cares team brought together young girls from across the Deadly Youth Mentoring Program, Nanga Mai Marri Program and Play Her Way, giving participants from different programs the opportunity to connect, build friendships and represent Souths Cares together.
The girls started the competition strongly, securing an impressive win against the La Perouse Bummers, who looked to be one of the teams to beat.
With plenty of teamwork, determination and support from the sidelines, Souths Cares progressed through to the Grand Final, where they faced Weave Cool Kids.
In a fantastic finish to the inaugural event, Souths Cares came away victorious and were crowned the first Community Connections Cup champions.
Making the moment even more special, the girls were presented with the trophy by respected local Elder Aunty Barb Simms, surrounded by family, community and supporters.
While taking home the Cup was an incredible achievement, the afternoon was about much more than the result on the field. It was about creating opportunities for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls to feel supported, connected and proud, while building positive relationships with the people and organisations within their community.
Souths Cares would like to thank all the Elders, parents, carers, mentors, staff, Randwick City Council representatives and Eastern Beaches Police officers who came along to support the teams and helped make the inaugural Community Connections Cup such a success.
It was a great Friday afternoon of sport, culture, connection and community, and hopefully the beginning of a Community Connections Cup tradition for many years to come.
