Deadly Youth Mentoring Program Spotlight
Last Monday, Rabbitohs held their NXT LVL Performance Camp at the USANA Rabbitohs Centre in Heffron Park.
The Rabbitohs NXT LVL Performance Camp is designed to offer male and female Rugby League players aged 13, 16 a unique opportunity to train within an elite NRL High Performance environment.
Participating in the NXT LVL Camp were two mentees apart of the Souths Cares Deadly Youth Mentoring Program.
The Deadly Youth Mentoring Program provides at-risk Aboriginal youth with six months of intensive mentoring focusing on education, positive social activities and building connections with Aboriginal culture and community.
These two mentees were specifically chosen due to their exceptional progress in the DYMP program. These two are Alkina, 13 years old, and Tevita, 16 years old.
Alkina, a Year eight student from Alexandria Park Community High School, was selected to attend the Souths Cares NXT LVL Camp as a reward for her outstanding engagement and improved school attendance through the DYMP program. A passionate Rugby League player, she represents the U14s Redfern All Blacks and will also play in the U15s squad at the annual Koori Knockout. The skills and confidence she gained at camp will help her finish the season strong as she works towards her goal of one day trialling for the Lisa Fiaola Cup squad.
Tevita, a Year 11 student from Matraville Sports High School, earned his place at the Souths Cares NXT LVL Camp through his strong commitment to the DYMP program and improved school attendance. Since joining the program, he has re-engaged with school and community sport, is completing a school-based traineeship with Qantas, and has recently begun an apprenticeship. With aspirations to compete in upcoming Rugby League pathway trials, Tevita continues to make positive strides both on and off the field.
