Souths Cares’ Barranggirra Program is proving collaboration is the key to success in supporting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander leaners accomplish their training and employment aspirations.

A recent initiative, delivered in partnership with Licenses 4 Work achieved great outcomes, with 16 participants completing their White Card and Traffic Control training and securing employment.

The four-day training course, delivered through Licenses for Work’s Blacktown Training Centre involved Barranggirra Mentors and training facilitators working together to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment where participants could overcome barriers to learning and thrive.

The diverse group of learners came from across Sydney and included young people who had recently left school as well as mature-aged learners looking for a career change in the Traffic Control industry.

Josh Green is one of the participants who completed the joint Souths Cares and Licenses 4 Work initiative. Josh is from the Looma community; a small Aboriginal community in the Kimberley region of Western Australia that speaks Nyikina, Mangala and Walmajari language. After completing the training, Josh was offered a fulltime position with Evolution Group as a Traffic Controller and explained the employment opportunity would be life changing. “Souths Cares were a huge help for me and their mentors are the kindest people you will ever meet. I’ve now gained my confidence back to work, I can provide for my family and I couldn’t be happier”, Josh said.

Lowana Longbottom, Barranggirra Program Manager explained it was rewarding to be part of such a great initiative.

“To have a 100% completion rate for the training, let alone a 100% success rate for our participant’s gaining employment is a huge outcome for our mob.

Licenses 4 Work were a fantastic partner and we look forward to collaborating again on similar initiatives in the future”, Lowana said.

Souths Cares’ Barranggirra Program is proudly supported by Training Services NSW.
