World Champion Jai Opetaia to Ring the Legacy Bell This Saturday

As the Rabbitohs team runs out for the first half, the Rabbitohs Legacy Bell will be rung by the current IBF World Cruiserweight and Ring Magazine boxing Champion, Rabbitohs supporter Jai Opetaia, where he will be joined by his manager and former Rabbitohs first grade player, Mick Francis. Opetaia, whose professional boxing record is 28 fights for 28 wins with 22 victories coming by way of knock out, is a product of the Central Coast and hopes to one day defend his world title belts at a huge Australian boxing promotion at polytec Stadium in Gosford.

Growing up on the Central Coast, Opetaia became a Rabbitohs fan after one of his close mates made the South Sydney squad. His connection with the Club runs deep, not only as a fan, but as someone who’s walked alongside the team. In 2022, he joined the team at training during the pre-season, pulling on the red and green for a tough session at Erskineville Oval.

Now, he’ll play a part in a growing Club tradition, the ringing of the Legacy Bell. We introduced this new game day tradition against the Melbourne Storm in round 16, ringing it before kick-off to unite generations of Rabbitohs supporters and honour the spirit that’s carried us from 1908 to today. To mark the moment, Club captain Cameron Murray rang the first bell alongside his father, Corey Murray, a former South Sydney player and lifelong supporter. Together, they struck the opening chime in front of Members and fans, bridging the past and the present in one powerful moment. This week, that moment belongs to Jai Opetaia.
