Rabbitohs upgrade and extend contract of Ashton Ward until end of 2028 season

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are delighted to announce the contract upgrade and extension of halfback Ashton Ward for the next two-and-a-half seasons today.

Ward, 22, made his NRL debut with the Rabbitohs against the Sharks in round 21 last season, going on to play 15 first grade games so far in his career.

Ward has been upgraded to a top 30 contract for the remainder of the 2026 season and has extended his top 30 contract out to the end of the 2028 season.

Rabbitohs Head of Recruitment and Retention, Mark Ellison, says Ward has earned his contract extension.

“Ashton has shown he has what it takes to play at the NRL level and, at just 22 years of age, we are yet to see his best football,” Mr Ellison said.

“He has the opportunity to learn from some of the best coaches in the game and the best players in the game at our Club and he has been like a sponge, soaking in all of the knowledge he can, since moving into the top grade with us last season.

“His pace, his attacking ability and his bravery in defence make him a player that is respected by his teammates, and we’re all looking forward to watching his development over the next two-and-a-half years at least in our colours.”

Ward is very happy to be staying at South Sydney.

“I could not be happier to be staying here at Souths. They showed faith in me and gave me my shot in the NRL and I want to repay the Club for that,” Ward said.

“I love my teammates and learning under Wayne (Bennett) and the other coaches, and everyone around the Club has been very supportive.

“I also love playing for our fans and our Members. We see how passionate they are about this club every week and I love going out on the field and playing for them.

“There is a bright future here at Souths and I can’t wait to be part of it.”
