Tevita Tatola is confident South Sydney's depth will continue to shine at Magic Round, praising the young players who have stepped up throughout the season and highlighting Cameron Murray's crucial role holding the forward pack together.
Magic Round and the Next Man Up Mentality
As the Rabbitohs prepare for Magic Round, Tevita Tatola is looking forward to seeing a sea of Cardinal and Myrtle in the stands. "Probably just trying to see a lot of Red and Green jerseys in the stands. I think it's our home game so it'll be good to get a big crowd out there," he said.
South Sydney's ability to win despite missing key players has been a hallmark of their season, with young players consistently stepping up when called upon. Tatola pointed to Latrell Siegwalt, Edward Kosi and Ashton Ward as examples of players who have seized their opportunities with both hands. The buy-in from the playing group has been massive, with everyone committed to delivering what the coaching staff needs on the field.
That foundation is built during the week at training. Tatola explained that consistency starts on the paddock, where the team builds the confidence they take into match day. When they cross that white line, it's time to flip the switch and get the job done.
Siegwalt's Long-Awaited Debut
One of those breakthrough stories has been Latrell Siegwalt, who finally made his NRL debut after a lengthy journey to the top grade. Tatola was thrilled to see his teammate get his chance and make the most of it with a strong performance. "It was awesome man. Obviously like you said it's been a long journey for him, but he's just ever since he came in pre-season, he's worked really hard. He's trained well and he's been knocking at the door ever since so it was good to see him get his chance and he took it with both hands," Tatola said.
Siegwalt's work ethic throughout pre-season and the early rounds had not gone unnoticed by his teammates, who were pleased to see his dedication rewarded with an NRL debut and a performance that validated his selection.
Cameron Murray: The Glue in the Middle
While the next man up mentality has been crucial, Tatola was emphatic about the importance of having Cameron Murray back in the side this season. The South Sydney captain missed significant time last year, and his absence was keenly felt in the middle of the field.
Murray's impact extends well beyond what most people see from the stands. "He holds the middle together, he's like he glues us together in defence and attack. He's that ballplayer that we need, he takes the carries, gets quick play of the balls and in defence he's just always there. He's looking after us in the middle and he does all the little things that most people probably don't see in the stands but as teammates we praise him highly for it," Tatola said.
Off the field, Murray sets the standard for professionalism. He is typically the first player in the facility, stretching and warming up, and meticulous about his recovery protocols including ice baths and nutrition. His approach to looking after his body ensures he is always ready for training and match day.
Ward's Heart and Duncan's Breakout Year
Ashton Ward has impressed in the halfback role despite his smaller frame, putting his body on the line week after week. Tatola highlighted Ward's crucial try-saving tackle last weekend as an example of his commitment, noting that the halfback acts as a general on the field, steering the ship in both attack and defence.
Tallis Duncan has also taken his game to another level this season, scoring tries, making line breaks and delivering strong defensive efforts. His breakout campaign has been a pleasure for his teammates to witness, and Tatola hopes Duncan can maintain his excellent form throughout the year.
