Successful Launch of Play Her Way Rugby League Clinic

The Play Her Way Girls Rugby League Clinic kicked off last Friday, 31 January at Redfern Oval, marking a promising beginning for Souths Cares' newest initiative aimed at increasing female participation in Rugby League. The clinic, which welcomed aspiring young female athletes from south eastern sydney and the inner city, was a great success, setting the tone for the official program launch in mid-February.

The event saw a great turnout of young girls eager to enhance their skills, engage in high-quality training, and learn from experienced coaches and mentors. With a focus on skill development, teamwork, and confidence-building, the clinic provided a glimpse of the opportunities that lie ahead for the girls in the Play Her Way program.

Taleena Simon, a past player and ambassador for the program, was on hand to inspire and encourage the next generation of female Rugby League players. Simon has a career playing for the Redfern All Blacks and South Sydney Rabbitohs in the Harvey Norman NSW Women's Premiership, as well as representing NSW City and the Indigenous All Stars.

“It’s going to give young girls the opportunity to be exposed to a professional level and help prepare them for when they do play representative sport. If I had this program when I was young, it would have helped a lot. I definitely saw some local talent, and I can’t wait to see the girls develop through the program. I’m very excited for it.”

The energy and enthusiasm displayed throughout the day reaffirmed the importance of programs like Play Her Way in breaking down barriers to female participation in sport. The initiative not only equips girls with essential skills but also creates a strong culture of empowerment and inclusion.

With the first official Play Her Way program commencing in mid-February at the USANA Rabbitohs Centre, participants will enjoy a nine-week program of professional training, mentorship, and personal development. The program is designed to provide holistic support, addressing challenges such as affordability, access to quality coaching, and pathways for future opportunities in Rugby League. A total of ten Play Her Way programs will be delivered until at least 2027, ensuring ongoing opportunities for young female athletes to engage in Rugby League and develop their skills over the coming years.

Expressions of Interest to participate in the Play Her Way program are now open.

Play Her Way is proudly supported as part of the Australian Government’s $200 million Play Our Way Grant Program, the nation’s largest investment in women's sport.
