Round Rewind: Rabbitohs Run Riot on the Gold Coast

The Rabbitohs backed up their Round 13 win with a commanding 46-12 victory over the Titans at Robina Stadium in Round 14, 2024. With Latrell Mitchell starring and the spine clicking into gear, South Sydney piled on eight tries in a dominant attacking performance that delivered their third win of the season and their ninth straight over the Gold Coast.

South Sydney opened fast, wasting no time to get on the board. Damien Cook spotted a lazy marker and darted out of dummy half, slicing inside Keenan Palasia and surging into space. Latrell Mitchell loomed in support, streaming through the middle, and took the final pass to score next to the posts in just the ninth minute.

Next, the Rabbitohs found joy on the right. Close to the Titans line, the ball swung through hands until Cody Walker found himself with time and space. He squared up the defence, held up the pass with two dummies, and sent a perfect looping ball over the top to Jacob Gagai. Gagai latched onto it and dived into the corner.

Alofiana Khan-Pereira clawed one back for the Titans, but the Rabbitohs quickly reasserted control. On another right-side raid, Walker linked with Latrell sweeping out the back. Mitchell, with his trademark poise, shaped to pass, drew two defenders, and slipped a quick ball to Richard Kennar who ran a hard line and crashed over untouched.

With five minutes left in the half, the Titans struggled under the high ball. Mitchell sent a towering bomb into the sky and the bounce evaded Titans defence. Cody Walker pounced, weaving past two scrambling Titans and muscling his way to the line. At the break, the Rabbitohs were firmly in control at 22-6.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, the visitors kept rolling. With Latrell briefly slotting in at dummy half, he hit Tom Burgess on a short crash line and the big prop barged his way over from close range.

Not long after, Peter Mamouzelos scooted from dummy half and attracted attention with a deceptive step before firing a short ball to Davvy Moale. Moale surged through a defensive hole and planted the ball beside the posts to blow the scoreline out to 34-6.

The Titans responded with a David Fifita try, but Souths weren’t done. Jack Wighton jumped into dummy half and on fifth tackle sold a dummy, slipped past tired defenders, and dived over for his first of the night.

To close it out, the Rabbitohs scored one of their most creative tries of the year. Latrell launched another high bomb, and instead of catching it, Alex Johnston toed it forward with a soft touch. Wighton was first to react, juggled through a few defenders, and offloaded to a supporting Cody Walker, who cruised in to score his second and cap off a 46-12 demolition.
