Rabbitohs Complete Magnificent Comeback to Defeat Broncos

Rabbitohs Complete Magnificent Comeback to Defeat Broncos

South Sydney have managed an incredible come-from-behind victory over the Brisbane Broncos, defeating their opponents 22-14 after staring down a 14-0 deficit at halftime.

It was truly a game of two halves, with the class of fullback and captain Latrell Mitchell proving to be the difference between the two sides as he dominated the second half with a 14-point haul.

Siliva Havili and Isaiah Tass were also key contributors, both scoring crucial tries in the second stanza when South Sydney had the momentum.

The game started off slowly, with both sides afforded early attacking opportunities on which they were unable to capitalise.

The Broncos managed the first try of the contest after 15 minutes through Jordan Riki, who was the beneficiary of a cross-field bomb from Ben Hunt.

A penalty goal to Adam Reynolds – awarded for an accidental offside against Jamie Humphreys – saw Brisbane draw further ahead to lead 8-0 just ten minutes later.

The Broncos picked up their second try of the game four minutes before the break, as Deine Mariner finished off a silky move to the right with a one-handed diving putdown in the corner in what would be the final scoring play of the half.

South Sydney started the second half strongly, opening their account for the game through Siliva Havili with a close-range burrowing effort from dummy half to catch the Brisbane defenders napping.

Things continued in a positive manner for the Red and Green, with Isaiah Tass and Fletcher Myers combining on the left to manufacture the Rabbitohs’ second try of the game in the 52nd minute.

Tass beat his opposite Kotoni Staggs all ends up with a strong carry to break into open space before getting the ball to Myers on his outside.

Myers continued the move, drawing in Broncos’ fullback Cobbo before returning the ball to Tass who went on to score untouched. The try was converted by Latrell Mitchell for South Sydney to trail 14-12 with 27 minutes to play.

The Broncos looked certain to score just after the hour mark when Deine Mariner busted through the South Sydney defence clean and ran 50m. Mitchell at fullback had other ideas though, as he bungled Mariner into touch with a brilliant try-saving cover tackle just meters short of the line to keep his side in the contest.

A high shot from Broncos’ big man Xavier Willison on Lachlan Hubner gifted South Sydney the perfect chance to draw level. They did just that, with Mitchell slotting the penalty kick from in front of the posts for a 14-all score line with ten minutes to go.

A frantic final ten minutes saw both sides attempt field goal set ups on multiple occasions in a bid to break the deadlock.

The Rabbitohs were ultimately successful, with Mitchell launching a monster two-point field goal from just past halfway to put his side ahead with two minutes remaining.

It would prove to be South Sydney’s and Mitchell’s night in the end, with the fullback scurrying over for a final try on full time, and slotting the conversion to put the final score at 22-14 for a truly memorable South Sydney victory.

Field goals are difficult at the best of times. But with the rain pelting down and the scores tied with two minutes to go, nailing one the way Mitchell did was simply unbelievable, and a reminder of why he is considered to be among the game's elites.
