Alex Johnston will celebrate his 250th NRL game this week when the Rabbitohs travel to Melbourne, with the veteran winger eager to break South Sydney's lengthy losing streak at AAMI Park.
Breaking the AAMI Park Drought
The Rabbitohs head to Melbourne carrying a 20-game losing streak against the Storm, but Johnston is dismissing any intimidation factor as the team focuses on their own performance. When asked about the daunting record, Johnston remained unfazed, noting the team hadn't discussed the streak until it was raised by media.
"We definitely need to go down there and get our first win in I don't know how long, was it 20 games or something, so we definitely need to go and get a win," Johnston said.
250-Game Milestone
Johnston will reach the significant milestone of 250 NRL games this week, with his first match coming on Anzac Day at Suncorp Stadium years earlier. The timing of another Anzac round match for the occasion holds special meaning for AJ.
"It's a weird little coincidence that it was a pretty cool journey. It's been a long one now and 250 obviously be a special occasion for myself and my family," he said.
Statue and Future Planning
The reality of having a statue outside the stadium still catches Johnston by surprise at times. He admitted he sometimes forgets it's there and is taken aback when he walks past it, describing the honour as something he may never fully get used to.
When asked about his playing future beyond this season, Johnston confirmed he hasn't made any decisions yet. "I'm honestly not any closer. I'm just trying to find my footing this year and I feel like I'm starting to get in a bit of a groove, so keep playing good footy and that'll work itself out," he said.
Johnston’s immediate focus remains on building consistent performances and helping South Sydney string together quality football across consecutive weeks.
