Wayne Bennett Inducted as Queensland Rugby League Life Member
South Sydney Rabbitohs Head Coach Wayne Bennett has received another significant honour in his decorated Rugby League career, being inducted as a Life Member of the Queensland Rugby League.
Bennett was formally recognised at the QRL Awards at Brisbane City Hall on Thursday night, with Life Membership acknowledging his sustained and significant service to Rugby League in Queensland.
He was inducted alongside fellow Queensland Rugby League greats Mal Meninga, Eddie Ward, Karyn Murphy, Bruce Hatcher and Des Morris.
Bennett's contribution to the game in Queensland spans more than five decades, beginning as a player and coach in the Brisbane Rugby League before establishing himself as one of the most influential coaches in the game's history.
His coaching journey has taken him to the highest levels of Rugby League, including the NRL, State of Origin and the international arena, while his connection to Queensland has remained a constant throughout his career.
The QRL acknowledged not only Bennett's success on the field, but the lasting influence he has had on generations of Queensland players and people. In announcing Bennett’s Life Membership, the QRL said:
“Wayne’s influence on Queenslanders extends far beyond the victories, shaping generations of players and people. Wayne has built a legacy defined by resilience, loyalty and a relentless pursuit of excellence.”
Bennett was the inaugural coach of the Brisbane Broncos in 1988 and led the Club to six Premierships across two tenures. His NRL coaching career has also included stints with the Canberra Raiders, St George Illawarra Dragons, Newcastle Knights and Dolphins, alongside his two tenures as Head Coach of the Rabbitohs.
His first stint at South Sydney between 2019 and 2021 included three consecutive Preliminary Finals and an appearance in the 2021 NRL Grand Final before he returned to the Club as Head Coach ahead of the 2025 season.
Bennett also holds a special place in State of Origin history. He coached Queensland across multiple eras, including the Maroons' inaugural State of Origin series victory in 1981, before returning to guide Queensland to further series successes.
His induction into QRL Life Membership adds another honour to a remarkable career and recognises his enduring contribution to Rugby League in Queensland.
