Wayne Bennett: Alex Johnston’s Record Will Be Earned, Not Gifted | Media Wrap

South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett says the team won't be distracted by Alex Johnston's looming try-scoring record when they face the Roosters, insisting the milestone will happen naturally as the focus remains on executing their game plan.

Record Chase Not a Distraction

Wayne Bennett has made it clear that Alex Johnston's pursuit of the all-time try-scoring record won't distract his team from the task at hand against the Roosters this week. Bennett dismissed suggestions that the milestone has become a focus within the playing group, stating the team's preparation remains firmly on their own performance.

"We want him to get there, but we've all got our jobs to do, and we've got all our parts to play in the team. The opposition doesn't give a damn about Alex's record. So why would we focus on it? The bottom line, it'll happen, and when it happens we'll all celebrate."

Bennett revealed the record hasn't even been a topic of conversation within the squad despite the extended wait since last season. The coach said there's no need to manufacture excitement or motivation around the moment, noting it will take care of itself when Johnston crosses for his historic try.

Johnston's Unique Skillset

Reflecting on Johnston's career and what makes him special as a try scorer, Bennett drew comparisons to another South Sydney legend, suggesting the winger possesses rare qualities that set him apart from typical power-based finishers.

"If you look at Ken Irvine, he's pretty similar to him," Bennett explained. "They're not big guys…they just get there with skill and guile and great anticipation and a feel for the game. Some of the tries that Alex has scored, if you put other wingers in that position, they wouldn't score those tries because they just don't have the feel that he has to come onto the ball…and then get himself into the corner."

The coach praised Johnston's standing within the Club and his commitment to training despite being in the twilight of his career. Bennett noted the winger's dedication has been particularly impressive this season, with his training intensity showing no signs of someone preparing to wind down.

Five-Day Turnaround and Team Changes

With a short turnaround from their previous match, Bennett confirmed the team hasn't trained at full intensity this week but believes his players are in a good place heading into the Roosters clash. The coach said managing five-day turnarounds has become part of the modern game that every team must navigate.

Bud Sullivan will get an opportunity in the halves this week, with Bennett praising the playmaker's energy and skill. The coach said he enjoys coaching Sullivan and described him as a pleasure to work with, noting the respect he shows and the value the playing group places on him. Sullivan has overcome significant adversity, including a horrific injury at the end of last season and an infection that saw him spend Christmas in hospital.
