The Burgess Brothers Take the Field Together

Round 25 of the 2013 season marked a unique moment in Rabbitohs history, as Sam, Luke, George and Thomas Burgess played their first NRL match together in the Red and Green.

It was a moment more than a century in the making. Not since the Norman brothers ran out for Annandale in 1910 had four siblings played in the same top-grade side. For South Sydney, a Club built on family and tradition, the occasion carried even greater weight.

The match itself delivered its share of drama. A Sam Burgess sin-bin saw the Wests Tigers jump out to an 18–0 lead, threatening to overshadow the historic night. But the Rabbitohs rallied, with Sam scoring a crucial try and Luke crossing for his first-ever NRL four-pointer. In the final moments, all four brothers touched the ball in what became known as ‘The Burgess Set’, sealing a 32–18 comeback win and sending the crowd into raptures.

For the Rabbitohs, it wasn’t just a game. It was a celebration of brotherhood, of history, and of the spirit that has defined the Club since 1908.
