The South Sydney Rabbitohs will be in Queensland for the second week in a row this weekend, taking on the Gold Coast Titans at Robina Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the early game at 2pm.
Round 23 marks the first weekend of the NRL’s 2025 Indigenous Round. This is always one of the most special rounds of the season for South Sydney – a club with a rich history and tradition of great Indigenous players including Greg Inglis, Nathan Merritt and Eric Simms.
The Rabbitohs will don their 2025 Indigenous jersey for the first time on Sunday afternoon. The 2025 jersey is a powerful design, representing the strength, resilience and enduring fire of Australia’s First Nations people.
The Rabbitohs have an excellent record over the Titans, having won their last nine consecutive clashes, including the last five at Robina Stadium. The Red and Green will take plenty of confidence out of this dominant record, and particularly from their most recent encounter when they put 46 points on their opposition.
As they have many times before, Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker orchestrated the win on this occasion. Mitchell set up three tries, scored one and kicked six goals, while Walker scored two tries and set one up. It was a masterful display by the Rabbitohs and while Walker and Mitchell got the accolades, the entire team contributed immensely to this fantastic win.
The Titans have struggled in 2025, winning just five games out of 19, the least in the NRL this year. While they currently sit in second-last position, they have shown some form in recent weeks with the last three rounds yielding two incredibly tight losses to the Tigers and the Panthers, as well as an impressive win against the Warriors in New Zealand.
South Sydney will not be lulled into a false sense of security due to their great record over the Titans, or the Titans’ lowly position on the ladder. Both sides have plenty to play for in this game, particularly with a view to avoiding the dreaded Wooden Spoon at the end of the season.
The high stakes should make for a thoroughly entertaining game, with the Rabbitohs hopefully having enough fire power to extend their winning run over the Gold Coast.
Jye Gray: “I like his (Latrell Mitchell’s) catch-pass, how skilful he is and the way he’s able to beat defenders before he catches the ball almost.”
There are plenty of experienced campaigners in the South Sydney squad for young players like Jye Gray to learn from as they look to establish themselves in first grade. As a fullback, Gray is very fortunate to have one of the best number ones in the game at his disposal day-in and day-out at training in Latrell Mitchell. The prospect of Gray learning to catch-pass like Mitchell should have opposition defenders from all teams shaking in their boots.
“I take a lot of things from everyone. I try and learn a little bit from everyone. Obviously, a good role model, we have one of the best fullbacks here in Latrell Mitchell. I like his catch-pass, how skilful he is and the way he’s able to beat defenders before he catches the ball almost. It’s a little bit off everyone, but there’s one thing that I’ve learnt off him.”
Sean Keppie: “He’s been working hard for the last couple of years. It was good to see him out on the field on the weekend.”
One of the silver linings of South Sydney’s injury crisis this season has been the number of young players who have been given a crack in the NRL. Last week it was Thomas Fletcher’s turn to debut in first grade, and Sean Keppie could not have been happier for a player who is known amongst the squad for his work ethic. Fletcher has averaged 77.5 minutes per game over 18 appearances in NSW Cup this year, making 30 tackles per game. He made 20 tackles in the NRL against Brisbane last weekend from just 48 minutes, which shows his desire to not let the game pass him by – no matter what grade he is playing.
“[Fletch's] been working hard for the last couple of years. It was good to see him out on the field on the weekend. He’s a good kid and he really deserved it.”
Jacob Host: “It’s great for the culture. It’s great to show the young fellas what the Club’s about as well.”
Jacob Host is thrilled to see several of his teammates with long-term injuries rapidly progressing towards returning to the NRL. While the benefits to having the likes of Brandon Smith, Latrell Mitchell, Cameron Murray and Campbell Graham back on the field are obvious, Host thinks it is incredibly beneficial for the younger members of the squad to see what these guys put into their rehab during the week at training. It sets a positive culture for the whole Club, and shows the boys coming through what it means to be a professional footballer.
“It shows everyone wants to be back playing even though the season is somewhat of a disappointment… It’s great for the culture. It’s great to show the young fellas what the Club’s about as well. Having Brandon out there for his 150th has been massive for us. Potentially having Latrell is massive for us. I think Cam (Murray) and Campbell (Graham) are only a couple of weeks away which is very exciting for everyone.”
Team Changes
Rabbitohs Head Coach Wayne Bennett has made several changes to the side that lost to the Broncos in round 22.
Jamie Humphreys has been named to return at halfback after he was a late scratching prior to the Broncos game last weekend, due to symptoms associated with the head knock he suffered against Penrith in round 20. Siliva Havili will start in the number nine jumper, with Peter Mamouzelos and Brandon Smith both returning from injury via the interchange bench. For Smith, he will be celebrating his 150th NRL game after debuting for Melbourne against Newcastle back in round 13 2017.
The latest team news following captain’s run, confirmed by Wayne Bennett, is that Latrell Mitchell will return from a groin injury and captain the side from left centre. This move shifts Tallis Duncan into the second row, with Euan Aitken sidelined through injury.
For the Titans, Alofiana Khan-Pereira will come onto the wing in place of Phil Sami, who misses this game due to two separate head knocks suffered in last week’s loss to Penrith. Chris Randall will also return from a concussion layoff in the back row, pushing Jacob Alick-Wiencke to the bench with Tom Weaver dropping out of the side altogether.
