Souths Cares' Nanga Mai Marri (Dream Big) Program has had another outstanding year, with 28 students completing their HSC earlier this month.
This year's HSC cohort attended seven high schools within South Eastern Sydney including Alexandria Park Community School, Brigidine Catholic College, Goal College, Marcellin Catholic College, Matraville Sports High School, Our Lady of The Sacred Heart College and South Sydney High School.
The group of dedicated students have already begun planning for life after school with the support of their Nanga Mai Marri Program mentors. Four students have commenced fulltime employment, seven students are enrolled in apprenticeships and seven students are preparing for University admission in Semester 1, 2024. The remaining students will continue to work with their mentors as they explore their employment, education and training options for next year.
Cooper McGrath, a graduate from Alexandria Park Community School, has recently commenced working in the construction industry after completing his Traffic Control and White Card qualifications with the support of Souths Cares Barranggirra Program.
Thomas Johnson, Program MentorCooper has consistently attended our workshops at Alex Park and was keen to enter employment as soon as he gained his HSC. We worked with Cooper around his career aspirations and linked him with the right support to get him qualified and then land his ideal job in construction
Merinda Carney recently graduated from Goal College and has applied for Sports Science at Courses at the Australian College of Physical Education and the International Sports College Australia. For Merinda, a career in sports science will build upon her existing passion and skill set.
"I’ve always been interested in a career in the sporting industry and am looking to pursue this in 2024. My Mentors have been a massive help, assisting me with my cert 3 and 4 fitness course work, my university applications, and my schoolwork, whilst being flexible with me around my training commitments", Merinda said.
To celebrate gaining their HSC, Year 12 students were invited to a dinner with their mentors at Bondi Pizza, Eastgardens last week.
Each HSC graduate will continue to be supported through the Nanga Mai Marri (Dream Big) Program throughout 2024 as they transition into their employment, training and tertiary education pathways.
