Huge SG Ball Cup Win and Harold Matthews Cup Thriller Leads Pathways Performance

The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ SG Ball Cup and Harold Matthews Cup teams continued with their winning records this season, whilst the Tarsha Gale Cup team were unlucky not to record their second win of the season in matches played last weekend.

The SG Ball Cup team hammered the Panthers and the Harold Matthews Cup team sealed their win in the final minute of their thriller at Redfern Oval.

The Rabbitohs NSW Cup men’s team fell 40 points to 10 to the Newtown Jets at Sharks Stadium on Saturday.

The Rabbitohs led four-nil early after a try to winger Max Lehmann in the seventh minute, but they would not score again until the 50th minute through interchange hooker Daniel O’Donnell who crossed when the game was well out of reach.

Lehmann, centre Fletcher Myers, hooker Ryan Gray and middle forward TJ Toevai were rated the Rabbitohs’ best.

The Rabbitohs’ Jersey Flegg Cup under 21s men’s team went down 28 points to 16 to the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Sharks Stadium in a spirited yet mistake-riddled display.

In a game that often became quite spiteful, the Rabbitohs held their own until the final 20 minutes when the Sharks came over the top of them to seal the win.

Centre Daniel Wright scored in the 28th minute which saw the half time score sit at 12-4 in favour of the Sharks. Tries to prop Josh Alhazim and second rower Jayden Wolfe got the Rabbitohs back into the contest in the second half, but too many errors made the assignment too difficult to get the win.

Wright and halfback Nic Quinn were the Rabbitohs’ most dangerous attacking weapons, with middle forward Sione Lolohea aggressive in defence throughout the game.

The South Sydney SG Ball Cup under 19s men’s team racked up their third 50-point-plus scoreline of the season in a huge 52-8 win over the Penrith Panthers in an away game played at Redfern Oval.

The Panthers led four-nil in the first 15 minutes, but the Rabbitohs piled on five first half tries to lead 30-4 at the break, including doubles to five-eighth Taj Alvarez and winger Jacob Fong.

They would both go on to score their hat tricks in the second half, with the Rabbitohs winning the contest nine-tries-to-two.

With the side having scored 40 or more points on all but two occasions this year, the Rabbitohs are sitting in the top two on the competition ladder with two regular season matches to go.

It was an enormous team effort, with fullback Charlie Poynton scoring 20 points himself, ably accompanied by Fong, Alvarez, middle forwards Maddax Fui, Riley Allen and Elijah Keung, hooker Cody Hill and lock Harrison Rooke as the Rabbitohs best performers.

The Rabbitohs’ Harold Matthews Cup under 17s boys team got back in the winners’ circle with a gutsy 26 points to 22 win over the Penrith Panthers at Redfern Oval.

The Rabbitohs led 14-12 at half time courtesy of tries to winger Asher Pung and hooker Zane Hill.

South Sydney was trailing 22-20 with less than one minute left on the clock, but a try to five-eighth Payton Tarau, his second of the afternoon, stole the victory with 50 seconds remaining in the game, breaking the Rabbitohs’ two-game losing streak.

Tarau scored 18 of his side’s 26 points, and was joined by Hill, fullback Darcy Feltham, centre Diezel Guillonta, halfback Charlie Bateup, prop Anthony Mailangi, lock Keone Anitelea Tsioussis and utility James Davies as the Rabbitohs’ best performers.

South Sydney sits in sixth position on the ladder with two regular season matches to play, on equal points with the fourth-placed team and just two competition points ahead of the teams sitting just outside the top eight.

The South Sydney Tarsha Gale Cup under 19s women’s team fell 22 points to 16 to the Penrith Panthers in what has been described as a spirited yet unlucky performance.

The sides were locked at ten points all at half time after tries to prop Mequynne Logan and winger Phoenix Williams. The Panthers would score three-tries-to-one in the second half to snatch the win.

The Rabbitohs fought hard throughout the entire 60 minutes of the match with centre Abbie Ritchie and hooker Josephine Zapantis South Sydney’s most notable players.

The South Sydney Lisa Fiaola Cup under 17s girls’ team put in a big effort against the Penrith Panthers however they went down 64 points to nil in a difficult afternoon for the young footballers.

The Panthers led 24-nil at half time and went on with it in the second stanza, crossing for 12 tries in the end.

Prop Marleya Elekana was rated the Rabbitohs best performer in round seven and the scoreline did not reflect the effort put in by the young Rabbitohs.
