Following the unexpected passing of his wife, Sophia, in 2013, long-time Club volunteer and beloved mascot Charlie Gallico — better known to generations of Members as Reggie Rabbit — was expected to miss the Rabbitohs’ clash with Newcastle the following week.
But Charlie, being Charlie, refused to miss the game.
In a powerful show of respect for both Charlie and Sophia, the Rabbitohs' players formed a guard of honour as Reggie Rabbit made his way onto the field. It was a moment that spoke to the bond between the team, its people, and the community that surrounds them.
After the Rabbitohs secured the win, Adam Reynolds and Issac Luke lifted Reggie onto their shoulders and carried him to The Burrow, where supporters rose to their feet in a standing ovation. A simple act — yet one that resonated deeply across the Red and Green family.

Charlie has worn the Reggie Rabbit suit since 2002, becoming a source of joy for Members young and old. His dedication, warmth and unwavering spirit have made him one of the Club’s true icons.
The image of Reynolds and Luke carrying him from the field serves as a reminder that the Club is built on more than victories and results. It is shaped by its volunteers, its characters and the people who give their all without ever asking for anything in return.
A moment that showed, once again, why since 1908, South Sydney is still here.
