On This Day: Bernie Purcell became the first forward to score 1,000 points

On This Day in 1959, Bernie Purcell became the first forward to score 1,000 Premiership points after kicking nine goals against Newtown in their 27-15 win at Redfern Oval.

A burly backrower, Purcell played 11 seasons with South Sydney and was part of Rayner's Premiership Rabbitohs in the mid 1950s.

Purcell represented NSW and Australia and later came back to coach the Club between 1964 and 1966.

Having started his career at Western Suburbs, Purcell finished with a career tally of 38 tries and 519 goals for a total of 1,152 points!
