Rabbitohs forward and Gamilaraay man, Kyle Turner, knows and feels the strong connection between the Club and the Indigenous community every day.
With the Club based in Redfern and encompassing many Indigenous communities throughout the South Sydney area, Turner can’t wait to not only represent the Rabbitohs and his own people when he runs out wearing the Indigenous jersey this Thursday against the Dragons, but all Indigenous communities.
“We’ve got a strong connection with Indigenous people, being based in Redfern,” said Turner.
“The culture around here is really strong – it’s really special to us to run out with the jersey when we do. It’s going to hold that extra meaning, not just to be a part of the Bunny, but representing your people out there.”
A proud Indigenous All Star, Turner admits that his culture and heritage means much to him, having grown up in a strong Indigenous family.
“It really meant a lot to me,” said Turner.
“My grandmother was an elder of the community and she was one of the few remaining people in the community that still knew the Gamilaraay language.
“Stuff like that always holds a special place in my heart – being a part of the family and what they represented.”
The jersey that will be worn by the Rabbitohs this week is designed by Sydney-based Indigenous designer, Nikita Ridgeway, and tells the stories of six of the Club’s Indigenous players including captain Inglis, Indigenous All Stars representatives Kyle Turner, Alex Johnston, Chris Grevsmuhl and Dane Nielsen, as well as Rabbitohs 2016 debutant Cody Walker.
