The South Sydney Rabbitohs are excited to support and cheer on two Rabbitohs fans who are competing at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
Australian hockey player Glenn Turner and Boxer Shelley Watts are in Rio and are preparing to compete as the Olympics Games creeps up with the Opening Ceremony commencing on Saturday.
Glenn Turner is an International hockey star, featuring regularly as a starter in the Australian Kookaburras team. As a striker, Turner has scored 93 goals in 130 games and will look to crack the 100 goal milestone at Rio.
Turner and his family bleed Red & Green due to his grandfather and ex-Rabbitoh Kevin Turner. Kevin represented Souths during 1956 – 1958 playing alongside Clive Churchill. As a winger he clocked up 48 points through 16 tries in 15 games.
Turner and the Australian Men’s hockey team will compete on Sunday against rivalling neighbours New Zealand in their first match for the Games.
Female Boxer, Shelley Watts, fell in love with the Rabbitohs after following in the footsteps of her father. Her dad made the decision to cheer for the team based on their Red & Green colours and how they matched those of his local team in Laurieton, NSW.
After making history as being the first female to win a gold medal in boxing at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Watts is aiming to bring home the Olympic Gold as she competes in her first Olympic Games. Watts will contest in the 60kg Women Light event that will commence on Saturday 13th August.
The Club wishes the best of luck to both Turner and Watts and will be cheering them during their Olympic journey.
