Strong finish sees Rabbitohs power past Mounties

The South Sydney Rabbitohs women have become the sole leaders of the Harvey Norman NSW Premiership, toppling rivals the Mount Pritchard Mounties 26-8, at ANZ Stadium.

A strong second half from the Red and Green secured the two points as Mounties struggled to contain the damaging Rabbitohs forward back.

However, it would be the Mounties who would start the match better and opened the scoring first through halfback Talia Lealaiauloto.

Throwing the ball around on the Rabbitohs line, Mounties eventually found the gap to squeeze through, scoring their first points to lead 4-0 after 12 minutes.

The Rabbitohs were slow to get into the match sustaining plenty of pressure against a very strong Mounties attack but held firm in defence.

The Red and Green would then be rewarded for their steely defence in the 19th minute of the match, as five-eighth Lavina O'Mealey sliced through the Mounties defence to score in the corner.

Halfback, Maddie Studdon was unable to add the extra points keeping the sides level at 4-4. The try raised the Rabbitohs confidence and they soon took charge of proceedings.

Winger Taleena Simon would give the Rabbitohs great attacking field position after her damaging run won her side a penalty.

From there the Rabbitohs took full advantage of the opportunity in the Mounties half as a lovely short ball from Studdon found forward Eunice Grimes who powered her way to the line to score next to the posts.

Studdon converted the try to give the Rabbitohs a 10-4 lead. However, the Mounties would fire straight back with a try of their own right on half-time.

Lealaiauloto would turn provider this time, as her towering bomb was dropped by Simon. This allowed Mounties winger Monique Donovan to ground the loose ball. The conversion was missed from in front, giving the Rabbitohs a slender 10-8 lead at half-time.

Both sides came out in the second half with the same vigour that they started the first but it would be the Rabbitohs who struck first.

Running off another Studdon short ball, forward Kim Kershaw bullied her way through the Mounties defence to score, giving the Rabbitohs the perfect start to the second half.

From there the Rabbitohs looked unstoppable and were in again shortly after through Simon.

Studdon again was at the heart of the play as her cut out ball found her winger Simon on the fly, who then strolled through to score another Rabbitohs four-pointer, giving her side a healthy 20-8 lead with 40 minutes played.

The Rabbitohs would continue to motor through the Mounties defence with ease and after working their way up the field, Simon found space up the middle to score her second try.

Studdon completed her winger's efforts with another successful conversion to round up another strong win for the Rabbitohs who made it six from six in 2018.
