Souths Referee Marks 300th NRL Match

Gavin Badger will become just the fifth referee to reach the milestone of 300 NRL matches when he officiates on Sunday.

Growing up in Redfern and with Indigenous background, Badger started his refereeing journey with Souths Referees in the local Souths Juniors competition before starting his NRL career in 2003.

Badger will be lead referee in his 300th match, which will see him join Bill Harrigan, Col Pearce, Shayne Hayne and Steve Clark in the exclusive club.

CEO of Souths Juniors, Luke Curry, is proud of what Gavin's achievement means for aspiring Souths Referees.

"It's great for Gav, he's an excellent referee and this milestone highlights that. It's also great our refs currently who can see there is a pathway to the highest levels through Souths Referees," said Mr Curry.

"Gav, Paul Simpkins and other Souths Referees have set a great example for our current crop of referees, who are all great kids."

Souths Referees will be helping out at our Park Sydney, Erskineville, event on Saturday 12th August. The Park Sydney joint venture is proud to be major sponsor of the South Sydney District Rugby League Referees Association or Souths Referees.

NRL Head of Football Brian Canavan points to the adaptability of Badger as one of the characteristics that has made this achievement possible.

“Gavin should be very proud of what he has done for the game as a match official,” Mr Canavan said.

“The game has changed significantly over the years so for Gavin to evolve as he has through different refereeing models to remain one of the leading referees in the game is a wonderful achievement.”
