Rabbitohs women rampant in historic first win

History has been made as the South Sydney Rabbitohs women's side clinched victory in their first ever match, destroying opponents Newcastle CRL 54-4 at Redfern Oval.

The match began as a scrappy affair with plenty of cobwebs being blown out as both sides gave their fair share of errors and penalties.

The home side scored first through forward Eunice Grimes, who barged her way over the line through a powerful run. Halfback Maddie Studdon converted to give Souths a 6-0 lead.

Newcastle hit back in the 25th minute through Cassie Ormsby after some ill discipline from the Rabbitohs gave their opponents field position. With the conversion unsuccessful, the Red and Green remained ahead 6-4.

In a match dominated by the forwards, it was no surprise to see Grimes get over the line again to put Souths ahead 12-4 after another conversion from Studdon.

Sharon McGrady added some bench impact and bagged herself a try after a break from lock Jasmin Allende. With a third successful conversion, the Rabbitohs sat 18-4 ahead at half-time.

With the first half nerves out of the way, the Rabbitohs came straight out of the blocks, with Allende's hard work earning her a deserved try. Studdon converted for a 24-4 lead.

The forwards continued to roll downfield and second rower Chloe Caldwell added her name to the try-scorers list as Allende and hooker Rebecca Riley combined to break open the Newcastle defence.

In a 10 minute period, the Rabbitohs put on two more tries with Nakia Davis-Welsh diving over from dummy half and Allende once again breaking the line, scoring a powerful try.

Despite the game already being won, the Rabbitohs continued to gain their momentum, with Taleena Simon and Emma Gillogly touching down.

Studdon finished the match converting all nine tries, including nailing a sideline conversion in the last minute.
