Rabbitohs women claim Minor Premiership

The South Sydney Rabbitohs women's team are the Harvey Norman NSW Women's Minor Premiers after winning their final regular season game 40-4 against the North Sydney Bears at North Sydney Oval.

The Rabbitohs wrapped up first spot on the ladder thanks to hat tricks to try scoring phenomenon Taleena Simon and young gun Bryanna Murray.

Despite the emphatic scoreline, it was a slow start from the Red and Green who were heavily matched by a fired up Bears.

It was the women in Red and Black that would score first through five-eighth Shanice Parker who burrowed over from close range to punish the South Sydney defence.

The conversion was sent wide but Bears had a 4-0 lead after just five minutes.

It took a little time for the Souths to click into gear but when it did there was no stopping the eventual winners.

Taleena Simon got her tally off to a start in the 15th minute, with a trademark run from 30 metres out to score in the corner.

Halfback Maddie Studdon was unable to add the extras but the Rabbitohs were level at 4-4.

Kyara Nean was the next South Sydney try scorer.

Having one of her best games of the season whilst playing in an unfamiliar forward role, Nean was too strong close to the line and barged her way over to score next to the uprights, which allowed Studdon to easily add the extras and to take the Rabbitohs out to a 10-4 lead.

The Rabbitohs would then score tries back-to-back in quick succession just before half-time.

Centre Emma Gillogly scored a brilliant individual try as she sliced through the defence with ease after a Rabbitohs scrum to score.

Then it was Murray's turn to score after she showed great tenacity to keep up with a flying Simon, to receive an offload and then slam the ball down for her first try in Rabbitohs colours.

Studdon nailed both the conversions to send the Rabbitohs to the sheds with a 22-4 lead.

The second half started like the first with the Bears coming out looking to spoil the Rabbitohs party.

However, after ten minutes of back and forth between the two teams, the Rabbitohs pounced again through Murray, who had the simple task of catching and putting the ball down for her second try.

The talented Murray would then grab her hat trick in the 49th minute with another try in the corner to send the Rabbitohs faithful into raptures.

Studdon was unable to add the extras on both occasions but the Rabbitohs now had an unassailable 30-4 advantage.

Providing every last pass to her teammate, winger Simon wasn't going to be outdone by the evergreen Murray, scoring two quick late tries to send her season tally to 22 for the season.

Despite the valiant effort from the Bears, the Rabbitohs were simply too good in the end, as they wrapped up the minor premiership and put themselves within one game of the Grand Final.
