Rabbitohs Legend Helps Inspire Malabar Students

Former Rabbitoh and Indigenous All Star, Beau Champion, this week spent time with Year 5 students from St Andrews Primary School Malabar as part of the Souths Inspires Program.

Beau, who is an Ambassador with Souths Cares, worked as a teachers’ aide for two mornings, inspiring students to dream big and believe in themselves.

“The Souths Inspires Program is all about engaging students and encouraging them to have a dream while also helping them identify ways they can achieve them,” said Beau.

“Achieving any goal takes motivation and determination especially when there are barriers to overcome, and there are barriers that we all have to overcome.

“When I speak with students I share parts of my story which I think helps to motivate them.

“I talk about how injury affected my professional football career and what steps I had to take continue with my dream.

Champion’s focus with the St Andrews students was to highlight the importance of finishing their schooling by getting across the following messages regarding the importance of doing just that. Completing school:

•             influences the type of work you can do;

•             your earning capacity;

•             reduces your health risks; and

•             decreases inequality.

“It’s such an important message to get across – that education is key to having future options,” said Beau.

“I’d like to thank teacher, Ms Brenda Smith, for inviting me to spend time with her students.

“It was fantastic to meet with such a great bunch of kids, and I’m sure we’ll be seeing plenty more of them as they set more goals to achieve!”
