Rabbitohs Appoint Ryan Carr As NYC Coach, Pat Richards And Ben Lowe As Assistant Coaches

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have appointed Ryan Carr as the Club’s NYC Coach, with Pat Richards and Ben Lowe joining him as assistant coaches for season 2017.

Ryan Carr, 27, comes to the Rabbitohs from the Cronulla Sharks where he was NYC Assistant Coach to John Morris.

A recent graduate of the NYC competition, Carr captained the North Queensland Cowboys U20s squad in 2008. Carr spent time playing at halfback for the Redcliffe Dolphins, steering them to a Queensland Cup semi-finals appearance before being signed by the Rabbitohs in 2012 and working under Coach Michael Maguire.

“I coached Ryan in 2012 and he has an excellent knowledge of the game. He was a smart player with a real football brain and he’s now using that in his coaching work,” said Maguire.

“Ryan is a young coach and that will bring an energy and hunger that will help drive our youth squad forward. His recent experience in the NYC competition, both as a coach and player, has provided him with a great understanding of what it takes to succeed at that level.”

Pat Richards, 34, joins the Rabbitohs after retiring from the Catalans Dragons earlier this year. An exceptional outside back, Richards won multiple titles and individual honours across the NRL and Super League during his 17-year career.

Rabbitohs Head Coach Michael Maguire coached Richards during his time at the Wigan Warriors and is pleased with his addition to the coaching staff.

“Pat will be a huge addition to the Rabbitohs coaching staff. He brings with him a wealth of experience in gaining success in the NRL and Super League and the knowledge he’ll bring to our Club will help shape our youth squad as they progress here,” said Maguire.

“I had the opportunity to coach Pat at Wigan and the professionalism that he displayed there and throughout his career has shaped him into a leading figure in Rugby League.”

Ben Lowe, 31, re-joins the Rabbitohs after retiring from NRL in 2015. Lowe is a South Sydney favourite, spending his 15-year career playing for Souths. Ben Lowe was awarded the Bob McCarthy Clubman of the Year in his final season at the Club.

“Ben Lowe lives and breathes the culture that we’ve established here at the Rabbitohs. I’ve had a close relationship with Ben for a number of years and he really wants to help provide our young players with the opportunities that he had as a player,” said Maguire.

“We’ve put together a really strong coaching staff and I’m excited by what they will achieve together for our young players.”
