At seven years old, Rabbitohs Member Cruz Hoit-Scott has represented the Rabbitohs jersey in a pretty special way. Each month he cooks and delivers food for the homeless in his home city of Brisbane.
After Cruz watched a documentary about the homeless epidemic in America, he was intrigued with the topic and was keen to find out more information about the homeless in Australia.
“In 2015 he watched a documentary with his Nanna,” explained Cruz’s mum, Lisa Hoit-Scott.
“The documentary was about the homeless epidemic in America. Cruz asked his dad and I if there was anything like that in Brisbane.
“We thought it was just a phase but he kept asking and asking and that’s when we thought we should do something.”
From that moment, Cruz and his family started cooking meals and delivering them to the homeless.
“We met people along the way like the Brisbane Motorcycle Street Feed team who hire out a carpark across the road from the homeless shelters.
“We go there every month and hand out blankets and toiletries as well.”
Each Christmas and Easter, Cruz also makes goodie bags with the help from donations of chocolates, lollies and Easter eggs.
Cruz has always loved the Rabbitohs, following the team after choosing the Rabbit as his favourite animal since a young age. Sporting a Rabbitohs cap in most of his photos, Cruz’s grandad gifted him a jersey last year adding to his dream to one day become a Rabbitoh.
Based in Brisbane, it’s difficult for Cruz and his family to make it to any home games however this year he will have the opportunity to head to the Rabbitohs Round 14 away game against the Brisbane Broncos where Cruz will celebrate his eighth birthday!
Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly has described the Club’s delight of seeing Cruz represent the Rabbitohs in such a positive way.
“We’re looking forward to meeting Cruz and celebrating his birthday in Brisbane at our match against the Broncos,” said Solly.
“For Cruz to volunteer his time and energy to feed the homeless of Brisbane at such a young age is remarkable.
“We’re fortunate to have him as a Rabbitohs Member – he represents the Club in the best way possible by making a great contribution to his community”.
