Maguire's Insights: Round 6, 2017

Head Coach Michael Maguire gives us his insights heading into his sides round six clash against the Penrith Panthers at Pepper Stadium on Friday night.

After two identical scoreline defeats to the Roosters and Cowboys in rounds four and five, Maguire says his team are aware of what needs to be done to register the positive results he knows they're capable of.

"There are areas we know we need to be better at," said Maguire.

"Connections of our play in attack have definitely got to improve. I can see that our spine are coming together, especially this week, to make sure that we can work hard around those areas.

"We need to make sure that the times we have opportunities - we take them."

The Rabbitohs will welcome back more of their depth with George Burgess returning from suspension to compete for a position in Maguire's run-on squad this Friday. Maguire is expecting this to fire up performances in the forward pack.

"We've got a forward pack that has a lot of competition around positions," said Maguire.

"We see George coming back into the frame this week, the opportunity of bringing him back and a few others that are performing well in reserve grade, so I've got some quality players there.

"I think it's a very good pressure - At the end of the day a competitive squad allows you to be successful on the park."

Coming up against the Penrith Panthers, who sit equal with us on the NRL Ladder with four points each, Maguire is expecting a lively game at Pepper Stadium. Defensively, he wants to see his squad step up for this clash.

"They're a bit unorthodox compared to your standard team - they like to shift and offload and play a very off-the-cuff game," said Maguire.

"You've got to make sure defensively you're moving and working hard."
