Maguire: It’s a Whole New Ball Game

Rabbitohs Head Coach, Michael Maguire, is looking forward to this Friday’s traditional clash against the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium.

While the Rabbitohs took the points against the Roosters in Round 1, Maguire cited the fact that the match will be a whole new ball-game with the focus of his side firmly trained on getting the two points this week.

“You look at a few performances along the way but it’s a whole new ball game when we step out on Friday,” said Maguire.

“We’ve got to make sure that we’re really focussed about the things that we need to do.

“For us, we’ve got a lot of things that we need to improve on so it’s about looking at the little things that we need to get better as a team. We need to be a lot stronger defensively right through the middle of the park.”

The clash is also an opportunity to celebrate one of the game’s greats in Ron Coote as the two sides duke it out for the Ron Coote Cup.

Coote is revered by both the Rabbitohs and the Roosters, having played for, captained and won Premierships with both Clubs between 1964 and 1978. The Souths Junior was also an accomplished representative player, having represented NSW (15 caps) Australia on 23 occasions including World Cup matches, as well as Captaining the Kangaroos.

“All the old boys definitely in all our eyes are a big part of the Club,” said Maguire.

“’Ronny’, is such a nice guy and a humble man for the things that he’s achieved in his life and he’s doing great things in the background for Men of League – (he’s) still at it around the Rugby League circles.”
