Alex Johnston is looking forward to re-establishing himself as Maguire's first choice fullback this week against the Canberra Raiders in a new-look Rabbitohs outfit.
After plying his trade in the custodian role earlier in the year, the 21-year old spent his time on the wing since Round 10, notching up 11 tries in the process, and is currently the leading try scorer in the NRL.
Despite his try scoring rate on the wing, Coach Maguire believes AJ has what it takes to make the number one jersey his own after showing glimpses of brilliance this season, most notably his 55 metre try against the Bulldogs on Good Friday and his try scoring double against Manly in Round 2.
Johnston emphasised teammate Cody Walker’s speed in the halves would be a great asset for the team’s attack.
“I think we wanted to change it up and get a bit more speed in the halves,” said Johnston.
“Cody loves being in the halves. I think he wants to play there and I don’t mind playing fullback either, so we’re pretty excited."
Walker was a key player in his first stint at five-eighth this season, notching 9 try assists and 8 line breaks in 9 games. His involvements at first receiver looks set to add x-factor to the team’s attack, giving Johnston room to join he attack from the back line.
"Obviously last time I was at fullback I was growing, so this time I’m going to go out there and have some fun and play the footy I know I can,” said Johnston.
