A look back at the milestones of our longest serving Rabbitoh - John Sutton!
Debut
Round 17, 2004 – Sutton made his first-grade debut for the Rabbitohs against the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium. Playing in the centres, the Souths junior scored his maiden try in the 48-28 loss.
50th Game
Round 22, 2006 – Playing his 50th game for the Club, Sutton started at Lock with his side securing a tight 32-26 victory over the Penrith Panthers. The occasion was marked by a Nathan Merritt hat trick.
100th Game
Round 13, 2009 – Sutton’s 100th career game would come against the North Queensland Cowboys at Dairy Farmers Stadium. Playing alongside Chris Sandow in the halves, Sutton was unable to celebrate the milestone, with the Red and Greens suffering a 46-12 loss.
George Piggins Medal 2009
2009 marked the first year Sutton won the prestigious ‘George Piggins Medal’ – the best and fairest award for the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
150th Game
Round 20, 2011 – Playing against the New Zealand Warriors at ANZ Stadium, Sutton’s Rabbitohs were defeated 48-16 in his 150th game.
George Piggins Medal 2012
Voted as the Rabbitohs best and fairest, Sutton claimed his second ‘George Piggins Medal’ in 2012.
200th Game
Round 20, 2013 – The Rabbitohs 32-14 victory over the Gold Coast Titans at Cbus Stadium saw Sutton join an exclusive club, with the utility becoming the 5th player to make 200 first-grade appearances in the Cardinal Red and Myrtle Green. The other players to achieve the feat are Bob McCarthy, Eric Simms, Craig Coleman and Nathan Merritt.
George Piggins Medal 2013
Alongside Greg Inglis, Sutton was named South Sydney’s best and fairest for season 2013, adding a third ‘George Piggins Medal’ to his collection.
212th Game
Round 5, 2014 – The Rabbitohs clash with the Dragons saw Sutton surpass Bob McCarthy’s 211 games and become the most capped Rabbitohs player in the Club’s history. Souths would honour the occasion with a 26-6 victory on the hallowed turf of the Sydney Cricket Ground.
2014 Grand Final
With Sutton at the helm, the South Sydney Rabbitohs claimed their first Premiership since 1971, defeating the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 30-6 at ANZ Stadium. The victory meant that the Souths junior would join the likes of Alf Blair, George Treweek, Jack Rayner and John Sattler as a Premiership winning captain.
250th Game
Round 17, 2016 – This week’s clash against the North Queensland Cowboys at Barlow Park in Cairns will mark a historic achievement, as Sutton marches out for his 250th game in the Red and Green – a feat never achieved before.
