Inglis to Notch Up 35th Test

Rabbitohs skipper, Greg Inglis, will notch up his 35th Test for the Kangaroos this Friday night when Australia takes on New Zealand in the annual ANZAC Test in Newcastle.

Inglis made his Test debut in 2006 – just one year after making his club debut as a fresh-faced teen – and has since gone on to cement his place in the green and gold of the Australian jersey, playing everything from ANZAC Tests to Four Nations matches and World Cups.

But while proud of the achievement and the many memories he has amassed so far in his career, what stands out the most is rubbing shoulders with his Australian teammates.

“It’s always great to represent Australia, without a doubt – when you throw numbers out that this is going to be my 35th Test – it does makes me seem a bit old,” laughed Inglis.

“There’s a few games I remember, and there’s a few that I don’t, but most things that I do remember are coming into camp and enjoying time around the boys.”

But one on-field memory does stand out for the Bowraville Tigers and West Newcastle product.

Selected in the historic 2008 Centenary Test to play New Zealand at the SCG, Inglis produced a feat of athleticism that has become a mainstay of international Rugby League highlights reels since.

With the Kangaroos – playing in traditional sky blue and maroon striped jerseys – on the attack, Johnathan Thurston kicked across-field to find Inglis in the in-goal. But with the Queenslander fast running out of space, the Rabbitohs skipper jumped over the dead-ball line and batted the ball back into the hands of a waiting Mark Gasnier to score.

“It definitely is (a memorable moment),” recalled Inglis speaking to Rabbitohs TV.

“(It was) my first time playing at the SCG in 2008. That’s the most talked about thing that’s happened especially that night.”

Inglis will this week partner Josh Dugan in the Australian centres, a position that he is no stranger to, having previously won accolades both there and at five-eighth during the course of his career.

“I’ve played it (centre) long enough and I do know my role” said Inglis.

“The best thing about it is the great communicators around me. JT (Johnathan Thurston) is inside me and he gives really good, clear instructions and directions. We’ve played together for so many years and slotting back there – I won’t be a stranger to it.”
