Indigenous Jersey - Kyle Turner

Describing himself as a proud Indigenous man, Kyle Turner gives us an insight into his Indigenous Heritage and the importance of the Rabbitohs Indigenous Jersey.

“It’s quite special to me,” Turner said.

“My Nan is an Elder of the community, she was part of the Stolen Generation and the stories and tales she can tell are really instilled in me and make me a proud Indigenous man.”

Turner describes the symbolism of the jersey representing unity within the team and explains how they are going to replicate this when they take the field as one against the Penrith Panthers.

“My totem is the Goanna. The jersey was designed by Cody Walker’s uncle and he has a cool design actually. It’s black all over with the Red and Green symbolising the link between all the cultures and totems.

“It’s quite special to the boys showing that unity as one and that’s what we’ve got to do when we go out there and play for the jersey and play for our people, we are going to play as one.”

Sitting in the heart of Redfern, Turner explains the strong Indigenous culture around the Club.

“It’s very special how Souths can adapt this whole concept of Indigenous players in our team. I think we have seven or eight of us that are actually in the side so there is actually a strong culture here especially being in the heart of Redfern.

“You walk down the street and you see the strong Indigenous heritage here and how much it means to everyone so I think it’s very special to wear this jersey and represent our people this coming week.”

The Rabbitohs will run out in their Indigenous jersey in Round 17 against the Penrith Panthers at ANZ Stadium kicking off the start of NAIDOC Week.
