How Inglis sold the South Sydney dream to Gagai

When Dane Gagai first thought about a change of scenery, South Sydney Rabbitohs captain fullback Greg Inglis admits he never hesitated to pick up the phone.

“I had a good chat with him about it,” said Inglis. “Obviously he had stuff going on at Newcastle so I just offered him if he wanted to come down.”

With a big decision to make about his playing future, the Australian winger could not of asked for a more comforting voice in a time of pressure.

“I got a wind that he was off contract and he wanted a different fresh look so I gave him ring.”

Having known Gagai for a number of years, Inglis was well aware that the Wally Lewis medallist’s talents would be a perfect fit to fill a gap at Souths.

“It was something that we wanted cause we were losing a centre in Bryson [Goodwin] so we need another good substantial centre winger,” Inglis added.

While Gagai’s decision relied more heavily on what the Club had to offer, the call from the star number one definitely helped make up his mind.

“He’s definitely a character I’ll tell you that," Inglis explained. “I just wanted to see where he was at, he’s go a family now so I asked what he wanted to do in regards to his family if he wanted to get up and move or stay there.

“I’m pretty close with Gags so I’ll be looking forward to when he gets here.”
