Four Burning Questions for Round 2

With Round 1 now in the rear-view mirror, Rabbitohs.com.au looks at four burning questions facing the Rabbitohs ahead of Saturday’s clash against the Knights.

1. Will it be Cody and Keary?

Adam Reynolds’ fractured jaw opens the door for Luke Keary to potentially partner Cody Walker in the halves in Round 2 – the Rabbitohs Premiership-winning playmaker set to return this week from suspension. The question is; does Michael Maguire hand the number seven jersey to Walker – who now enjoys the benefit of having steered the team around the park effectively against the Roosters and is now somewhat match-hardened – or does he opt for the more experienced Keary? Either way, the Rabbitohs will have an effective halves combo come Saturday. Other potential options in the halves include Greg Inglis moving to five-eighth, as well as Damien Cook.

2. How is George to be used this week?

George Burgess will this week be available for selection following the conclusion of his suspension period, but there’s no guarantee that the English international will simply walk into the starting 13. First class performances from Sam Burgess, Dave Tyrrell and debutant Zane Musgrove on Sunday against the Roosters, has served to stiffen the level of competition in the Club’s front-row. The loss of back-rower, John Sutton, to a pectoral injury will no doubt open the door further for George to find his place in the side this week. The Englishman could also start from the bench.

3. Who takes over the goal-kicking duties?

Another by-product of the Adam Reynolds injury is the question of goal-kicking. Bryson Goodwin deputised for Reynolds following the halfback’s exit from Sunday’s game, but he isn’t the only sharp-shooter in the team – not by a long shot. Cody Walker, Damien Cook, Greg Inglis – among others – are all blessed with kicking ability and will be able to do the job should they be called upon. The question is, who’s it gonna be?

4. How will the Knights respond?

Despite the injection of Blues halfback, Trent Hodkinson, the Newcastle Knights were unable to get over the top of the Gold Coast Titans at Cbus Super Stadium on Sunday – the Titans running away with a 30-12 victory in a five tries to two-effort. With wins difficult to come by in the NRL competition, Newcastle will be out to avenge their first round loss when they face the Rabbitohs on Saturday at ANZ Stadium.
