Barranggirra Participant Achieving Her Dreams

Maddison Devine is a participant in Souths Cares Barranggirra Program who has been working hard to achieve her dreams.

After leaving school in Year 10 Maddison was working part time packing shelves at a local supermarket. She has always had a passion for fashion and creative pursuits and when a Hair Dressing Apprenticeship became available at ‘Itz All About Hair’ in Campbelltown in 2020, she grasped the opportunity with both hands.

For the past two and half years, Maddison has shown great dedication to completing her apprenticeship and is now more than halfway through her training. A typical day sees Maddison complete a wide range of tasks such as cutting hair, colour preparation, straightening hair, taking client bookings and providing a high level of customer service to the salon’s customers.

Since joining the Barranggirra Program in March this year, Maddison has been receiving weekly mentoring to assist her to overcome some challenges, complete her training and develop her longer-term career aspirations.

Maddison has big plans for her future and intends on continuing her studies after she completes the apprenticeship.

“I would like to do a course in Business Management when I have completed my apprenticeship, as I would love to open a salon and start my own business”, Maddison said.

Derick Peachey, Employment and Training Mentor for the Barranggirra Program has been impressed with Maddison’s dedication to completing her trade.

“Like many young people Maddison has had a few challenges along her training journey but she has remained 100% dedicated to her career.

She is passionate about hairdressing, is hardworking and is committed to learning new skills - which is the perfect combination for opening her own salon one day”, Derick said.

The Barranggirra Program will continue supporting Maddison throughout her apprenticeship as she strives to achieve other important goals including obtaining her driver’s license, saving money and enrolling in a Business Management course upon completion of her trade.

The Barranggirra Program is proudly supported by Training Services NSW.
