Rabbitohs Women’s Almost Complete Impossible Comeback

For the first time this year the Rabbitohs Pathway’s sides all came out with a different result, with a win, draw and loss rounding out the weekend of play.

Unfortunately for the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership they were denied a second straight win being held to draw against Mounties, as the Jersey Flegg side fell short against Manly.

The NSW Cup side was the lone winners for the weekend as they walked away with a comfortable win over the Sea Eagles.

NSW Cup

It was another impressive win for the NSW Cup side, as they defeated the Blacktown Workers’ Sea Eagles.

After falling behind early, the Rabbitohs mounted an impressive comeback with seven unanswered tries that swung the result in their favour.

It was the second time this season Souths have defeated the Sea Eagles in NSW Cup, as they now find themselves within reaching distance of top spot on the ladder.

The Rabbitohs started the game in a very similar fashion to their previous outings with a try in the first five minute, this time it was Cody Hodge who opened the scoring.

Blacktown Workers’ answered back swiftly and got out to a six point lead after two tries from Steven Taupau Sako and Alfred Smalley.

It was all one way traffic from here, as the Rabbitohs went on to dominate the rest of match and held on for 57% of possession throughout the match.

Jack Campagnolo combined with Josh Mansour to level the score in the 25th minute, shortly before Hodge secured a first half double to send the Rabbitohs into the break with a one-try buffer.

The Rabbitohs wasted little time putting the result beyond doubt as play resumed for the second half, with five straight tries sealing the win.

Isaiah Tass opened Souths’ second half account just two minutes after the restart, shortly before Hodge popped up once again for his hat-trick.

It was a back and forth affair in the middle stanza of the second half, but the Rabbitohs continued to look likely to score whilst remaining solid defensively.

Jacob Gagai crossed over in the 57th minute to give the visitors a 14-point lead, as Davvy Moale followed suit minutes later.

Tass added the extras, but it was a disappointing day for our kickers striking at under 50% with three conversions from eight attempts.

With just eight minutes remaining, Mansour iced the game with his second of the afternoon as the Rabbitohs raced away with a 24-point victory.

It was a phenomenal outing for Cody Hodge not only securing a hat-trick but finishing in the top three for metres gained in a well-rounded performance.

Aside from struggling with his kicks, Isaiah Tass continued on his run of good form with two try assists, three line break assists and a four-pointer of his own.

The halves combination of Dean Hawkins and Jack Campagnolo excelled on both sides of the field, as the pair linked up for three try assists whilst going nearly perfect in defence.

Souths enjoy a bye next week before preparing for a massive game against the Eels in two weeks’ time.

Jersey Flegg Cup

The Jersey Flegg Cup side fell short after a late-comeback from the Sea Eagles undone after solid first half outing.

It’s been a frustrating season for the Jersey Flegg side, after showing flashes of greatness they once again let a lead slip in the second half.

There is still plenty of positives to take away from this game with yet another incredibly strong start to the game.

Tyrone Munro opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, which set the tone for the remainder of the first half as the Rabbitohs enjoyed plenty of success in attack.

After forcing the Sea Eagles into a few errors deep in their end, Souths maintained their pressure and put their opponents on the back foot.

Tallis Duncan once again stepped up with a massive try in the 14th minute to double the visitor's lead.

The Sea Eagles had a strong attacking set and were rewarded minutes later as Jason Smyth opened the hosts’ account.

However, the Rabbitohs ignited an attacking spell of brilliance and found themselves back in control of the game.

Duncan secured himself a first half double in the 31st minute, as the Sea Eagles were unable to handle the imposing forward’s impact on the game.

Heading into the break, the Rabbitohs’ held a strong ten point lead and were unlucky to have not found more points in the first half.

Picking up from where they left off in the first half, Wesley Bruines capitalised on some early momentum to extend the Rabbitohs’ lead to 14.

The successful opening to the second half was rounded out by Leon Te Hau who crossed over to put the Rabbitohs ahead by 20 points with 25 minutes left to play.

This was unfortunately the last of the Rabbitohs’ scoring for the game, as Manly flipped the script and completed an incredible comeback.

Tylor Bunting capitalised on an error to give the Sea Eagles a glimmer of hope in securing a result at the 48 minute mark.

The Sea Eagles turned this try into crucial momentum as the Rabbitoh’s began to fade with the ball in hand and gave away a few penalties in defence.

Gordon Chan Kum Tong secured a quickfire double to put the hosts within one try of completing an improbable comeback with plenty of time remaining.

The comeback was complete with just five minutes to go as Sanele Aukusitino crossed over to the put the Sea Eagles into the lead for the first time in the game.

The hosts would hang on for the victory and their fifth win of the season at the expense of the Rabbitohs’.

Although the result didn’t go their way, there was still a few standout performers including Tallis Duncan who has continued his incredible form and will be sure to secure a call-up to a higher grade as the season progresses.

Tyrone Munro showcased his skills from the back, giving the Rabbitohs a much needed threat out wide whilst securing critical field position coming out of his own end.

Romano Cook had a bounce back game from hooker, showcasing his pinpoint kicking game whilst remaining solid in in defence.

The Rabbitohs go into the bye this week before preparing for a matchup with the Eels in two weeks.

Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership

On the heels of securing their maiden victory of the season, the Rabbitohs’ women were sensationally held to a draw when they went against Mounties.

It was the penultimate round of the season for the Rabbitohs as they were put against the second-place Mounties side that had just lost one game all season.

Mounties held the best attacking record in the league and pushed the Rabbitohs to their limits in this game.

However, much like previous games against top quality opponents Souths lifted to their game to another level and demonstrated the immense improvement that we’ve seen over recent weeks.

In a back and forth affair, it was the Rabbitohs who fell behind early as the hosts opened the scoring through Jamie-Anne Wright.

Christine Pauli answered back for the Rabbitohs in the 10th minute, shortly before they took an unlikely lead through Brittany Constable.

Mounties took a while to regain the control of the game as the Rabbitohs showed plenty of resilience in defence.

It wasn’t until the final stages of the first half where Mounties recaptured the lead, as two quick tries from Haylee Hifo sent them into the break back into the lead.

Mounties continued their strong attacking form in the early stages of the second half as they extended their lead eight.

Jacinta Tui and Matilda Power crossed over in quick succession to give Mounties a three try lead, but they were unable to convert on any of their tries and gave the Rabbitohs a pathway back into the contest.

Therese Aiton put the contest within four points for the Rabbitohs, as they put Mounties on the backfoot in the final sector of the game.

After relentless pressure in attack, their persistence was paid off in the final minute of play as Terri-Ann Caine sensationally got Souths back into the game with a try to level the scores.

It was an incredible show of strength for the Rabbitohs to comeback against such a highly talented side in Mounties.

It was a very special moment for Terri-Ann Caine, who has been a silent achiever all year for the side and was rightfully given her chance to shine for the Rabbitohs.

The Rabbitohs go into the break this week before playing their final game of the season against Saints.
