Five key matches to pencil in the calendar

Over the course of the season there are a few key games to look out for. The Rabbitohs also have five Saturday home games at family-friendly times to really make a day out at the football.

Themed rounds are back and we absolutely love Indigenous Round and are proud to have the most Indigenous players in the NRL. That will be a highly anticipated match in round 12 when we head to Parramatta to take on the Eels. Here we celebrate indigenous culture as well as unveil the 2021 Indigenous Jersey, where our Indigenous players have a key role in the design. Last year Cody Walker and Alex Johnston had a couple of career-best games in Indigenous round so hopefully they will find similar form come May 29.

We have also jotted down five other key games to pencil in the calendar, get excited and take a look at what we have to offer, below!

Rabbitohs vs Roosters, Round Three ANZ Stadium, Friday March 26, 8:05pm.

It is always a rivalry match to remember and gives the winner bragging rights over the Eastern Sydney area for at least two weeks following. Round three the South Sydney Rabbitohs will be hosting the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium on a Friday night blockbuster. The last time the two played, well, it was all one-sided traffic with the Rabbitohs drumming the Roosters by a record 52 points! That game, Alex Johnston equalled a Club try-scoring record and was crowned the Ken Irvine Medalist with a little bit of help by the selfless Corey Allan.

Head-to-head the Rabbitohs have won three of the last five games, making claim to the Ron Coote Cup over the last two seasons and will be looking to start the first leg of 2021 well with a victory over the old foe.

Bulldogs vs Rabbitohs, Round Four ANZ Stadium, Friday April 2 (Good Friday)

The annual Good Friday clash has been a tradition that has built and become a true spectacle in the NRL Calendar over the last decade - It is a day for the whole family after all. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 and temporary suspension to the season, the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs did not get to compete on Good Friday in 2020, which makes this match even more anticipated!

While technically it is the Bulldogs’ home game, the match is being treated as a reciprocal game for our Members and with ANZ Stadium also being the home to the Rabbitohs, expect to see a sea of red and green out there in the stands. The Bulldogs have a young and new-look roster including a fresh halves pairing in Kyle Flanagan and Matt Burton; two excitement machines which will definitely need to be contained by our experienced halves in Adam Reynolds and Cody Walker.

Rabbitohs vs Storm, Round Nine ANZ Stadium, Thursday May 6, 7:50pm.

Coming up against the defending Premiers at ANZ Stadium, the Rabbitohs will be looking to test themselves against the best.

Melbourne have been a bogey team of Souths in recent years, but that does not mean we cannot tame the Storm come round nine. The match will pose great match-ups, such as Latrell Mitchell up against Ryan Papenhuyzen and the battle of the Origin five-eighths in Cody Walker and Cameron Munster.

Be there to witness the blistering speed of Damien Cook out of dummy-half. Last year at ANZ Stadium he cut right through the Storm pack, showing shades of that outstanding 2018 solo try. The markers better be on their game to contain Cook.

Rabbitohs vs Panthers, Round 11 Apex Oval Dubbo, Sunday May 23, 2pm.

It will be prime-time viewing when the Rabbitohs host defending Grand Finalists, Penrith Panthers, at Apex Oval Dubbo in round 11. There is nothing like country football on a Sunday afternoon and what better way to showcase this spectacle than the 2020 Preliminary Final rematch.

The Rabbitohs will find an extra gear coming off that heartbreaking 20-16 loss to the Panthers back in October. It just goes to show that rugby league is a game of inches as the Rabbitohs went ever so close to kicking a 40-20 in the dying moments of that match, which may have changed the game.

It will be a battle of the hookers when Damien Cook and Api Koroisau apply their craft out of dummy-half and no doubt the kicking games of both Adam Reynolds and Nathan Cleary will be both pin-point and crucial to the outcome of the game.

Rabbitohs vs Dragons, Round 25 ANZ Stadium, Saturday September 4, 7:35pm

It is a traditional match that takes us back to the battles of the 1950s on the hard SCG turf. However, this time we will be hosting the Dragons at ANZ Stadium in what is sure to have the same passion as what those historical games had.

The end of the regular season is a key game to win, to ensure you head into the finals with momentum and confidence, so this round 25 blockbuster will have plenty to play for.

The Rabbitohs and Dragons have had a great couple of battles in the past. Who could forget that last play by Braidon Burns and Campbell Graham to claim victory at the death back in 2019? Be there to witness another great match as the Rabbitohs and Dragons do batter in the last match of the regular season.
