Classic SCG Match: 1999 v Dragons

As the Rabbitohs prepare to take on the St George Illawarra Dragons at the SCG this Sunday, we throw back to the 1999 classic encounter between the two Clubs at the same venue!

Round 4 of the 1999 season saw a new chapter in Rabbitohs v Dragons history, with Souths taking on the newly-formed St George Illawarra for the very first time and coming away with a one-point win.

Despite the clash coinciding with NSW State election-day, a crowd of over 15,000 were on hand to witness history as the Rabbitohs emerged triumphant over that year’s eventual Grand Finalists, St George Illawarra by 25-24.

Boasting names such as Craig Wing, Mark Carroll, Darrell Trindall, Julian O’Neill, Sean Garlick, Matt Parsons and Ian Rubin – among others – the Rabbitohs were a strong outfit intent on making an impression having already downed the Bulldogs and Raiders in the first three Rounds.

But the Dragons were no less keen. With the likes of Trent Barrett, Nathan Brown, Nathan Blacklock, and current Dragons coach Paul McGregor all wearing the Red V, the stage was set for a classic encounter.

Rabbitohs halfback, Trindall, was in fine form – scoring two tries and orchestrating a number of opportunities before kicking the match-winning field-goal.

A fresh-faced Craig Wing meanwhile had a magic moment of his own when he took a no-look pass from winger, Lee Hookey to score in the corner, while Chris Caruana also scored a memorable solo four-pointer.
