Goodwin Focusing on Basics

As the Rabbitohs prepare to take on the Newcastle Knights in Round 2 of the NRL this Saturday, centre Bryson Goodwin has sounded out ball-control as being key to the success of he and his team.

It took almost 40 minutes of last week’s Round 1 game against the Roosters for the men in Red and Green to make an error – the side finishing the game with a completion rate of almost 90% while making only four errors.

But while that total went a long way to deciding the outcome of the game (42-10 in favour of the Rabbitohs) it’s something that Goodwin wants to see improve this week against a Newcastle side that is hungry to get its first win of the season.

“I think it’s the number one thing for most teams – especially early on in the season,” said Goodwin of controlling the football.

“If you hold the ball and it’s a bit hot, you go a long way to winning the games.

“In saying that, it is only Round 1. There’s a long way to go. We’ve been training well – everyone’s been really looking forward to just getting out there and playing footy.

“We’re happy with our performance (in Round 1), but just look forward to the Knights game.”

This Saturday’s clash will be South Sydney’s first home game of the year at ANZ Stadium.

Despite the injection of former Bulldogs and Blues halfback, Trent Hodkinson, the Newcastle Knights were unable to get over the top of the Gold Coast Titans at Cbus Super Stadium on Sunday  in their first game of the season – the Titans running away with a 30-12 victory in a five tries to two-effort.

With wins difficult to come by in the NRL competition, Newcastle will be out to avenge their first round loss when they face the Rabbitohs on Saturday at ANZ Stadium.
