Turner and Champion deliver inspiration

High schools from around the Mudgee area were treated to some words of wisdom from Souths Cares ambassador Beau Champion and South Sydney Rabbitohs forward Kyle Turner at Mudgee High School.

The visit organised by Souths Cares, in conjunction with the University of New South Wales, spoke to the students on the importance of goal-setting and the steps involved to reach those goals.

Turner, who grew up just around the corner from Mudgee in Coonabarabran, shared his insight with the students on his own life experiences.

“We shared some life experiences on what Beau and myself did to make it to top grade,” Turner said.

“Passed on a bit of wisdom to the kids that everyone has dreams and what you do to pursue those dreams. The kids enjoyed it and really took on everything we said.

“I actually wanted to be a professional basket baller growing up, Michael Jordan was my all time hero. As I got older, rugby league took over and here I am today,” Turner told the audience.

Champion stressed the importance of never giving up on your dreams no matter what.

“When I was younger if I listened to the people that said you’re too small, you can't tackle I would have never have played NRL,” said Champion. “Those are the things that drive you to be better.”

While the players addressed the students group by group, UNSW who work extensively with Indigenous children and kids from the bush ran a module educating and inspiring the students on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Their input along with the players voice made the day something to remember for all involved.
