Legend of League – Phil Blake

Often credited as the master of the ‘chip and chase’, former Rabbitoh Phil Blake was one of the game’s and the Club’s most exciting players of the late 1980s and early ‘90s.

Speaking to Channel Nine’s The Sunday Footy Show for their Legend of League segment, Blake spoke about the origins of his unique skill.

“It came from junior days and it came from just playing in the backyard or playing down at the park with my brothers and friends in the street,” recalled Blake.

“After school and school holidays, you’re out there from sun-up to sun-down and you’d just invent games.”

Blake played for a total of eight clubs in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. But despite his journeyman status, Blake regards his time at South Sydney as his best, and has a soft spot for the Red and Green.

“I needed a breath of fresh air, and I was very fortunate to find a club like Souths,” recalled Blake.

“Not only did my football improve a hundred percent, but myself as a person improved and it opened my eyes up to another side of Sydney that I had never seen before.

“Obviously I like to see Manly do really well, but I’ve always had – because of the way they treated me and because of the way they accepted me and because of the way it changed my football when I was there – I’ve always had a soft spot for Souths.”
