Pathways Wrap: Matts Cap Off Strong Month, Youngsters Crush Sharks

This weekend, the Harold Matthews Under 17s were able to cap off a strong month with a victory, while the Lisa Fiola Cup and Under 16s Development side had big wins over Cronulla.

NSW Cup Round 3: Sydney Roosters 38 def South Sydney Rabbitohs 16

It was a disappointing result for the NSW Cup side on the weekend, unable to overcome arch-rivals the Sydney Roosters who claimed a 38-16 victory at Wentworth Park in Glebe.

The two foundation clubs did battle for the first time at NSW Cup level since 2005 under the Rabbitohs and Roosters banners respectively, with the occasion all the more special being played at one of the original venues of the competition.

Unfortunately for the Red and Green, however, a first-half double to Peter Mamouzelos wasn't enough for the side to gain momentum, with errors and penalties playing a part in the loss.

"It was a very disappointing game, and one that got away ten minutes before half-time," said Rabbitohs Head of Elite Pathways and Development, Joe O'Callaghan.

"It was nice and tight for about 30 minutes, but they put three quick tries on us.  We’ve got to learn very quickly in Cup to get some discipline and too many penalties at key times and in the heat.

"In a positive, it was the first time since 2005 that the two teams were represented in the NSW Cup, and at any level, there is always going to be a fair bit of spite there, which was evidenced by some pretty heavy contact.

"Unfortunately, they handled the emotion better and we lost our way discipline-wise, and the scoreline didn’t reflect how one-sided the game was."

The South Sydney Rabbitohs will face the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles at Accor Stadium this Saturday in an exciting day for the Pathways teams, with the side taking the field before the NRL alongside the Jersey Flegg Cup team.

Jersey Flegg Cup Round 3: Sydney Roosters 30 def South Sydney Rabbitohs 20

A second-half surge wasn't enough for the Jersey Flegg Cup Rabbitohs, who were downed 30-20 against the Sydney Roosters prior to the NSW Cup match at Wentworth Park.

The Roosters showed why they are in first place on the ladder, shooting out to a 20-nil lead with the Red and Green found themselves needing to climb a mountain in the second half, with Louis Grossemy getting the ball rolling with a try two minutes on resumption.

A Roosters sin-binning opened up a further opportunity for points, with Carson Kaho and Dranza Hawe-De-Thierry adding their name to the scoresheet, while young forward Thomas Fletcher marked his Flegg debut with a try.

While it was a disappointing result against the Club's arch-rivals, there were plenty of positives from the second stanza, keeping the Roosters to just ten points, while a number of other talented SG Ball players will look to ascend into the side in the coming weeks.

The Jersey Flegg Rabbitohs join the NSW Cup side at Accor Stadium on Saturday afternoon as they face the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at 5pm prior to the NRL match.

Harvey Norman Womens Premiership Round 7: Central Coast Roosters 24 def South Sydney Rabbitohs 12

Fresh off the bye, the South Sydney Rabbitohs Womens side was unable to return to the field with a win, narrowly defeated by the Central Coast Roosters 24-12 at Redfern Oval.

The Red and Green went toe-to-toe against their highly-fancied opponents throughout the majority of the contest at their spiritual home, opening the scoring through Paige Knapp before Captain Patricia Raikadroka leveled right after the break.

Both sides continued to go tit-for-tat with second rower Ema Rainima with 15 minutes remaining with the scores locked at 14-all, but with injuries playing their part, their opponents scored twice to run away with the victory.

The Rabbitohs Womens side will continue their push for a finals spot when they host the Wentworthville Magpies back at Redfern Oval this Saturday afternoon at 3pm.

SG Ball Cup Round 7: Balmain Tigers 26 def South Sydney Rabbitohs 20

It was yet another tough week for the SG Ball Rabbitohs side, who were pipped at the death by the Balmain Tigers 26-20 at Redfern Oval in Round 7.

With the finals out of reach following an adversity-filled season, the match it proved to be an opportunity for a number of young Rabbitohs to make the step up to the under 19s competition.

Brent Hawkins (younger brother of NRL squad member Dean) scored the first try for South Sydney, before Oliver Juras touched down as the sides were unable to be separated at half-time with the scores locked at 10-apiece.

Both teams were reduced to twelve men 55 minutes in as they continued to go back and forth, and although a double to Daniel Wright saw the Rabbitohs come within two points, a try in the final minute handed the Tigers victory.

John Sutton's side hosts the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at Redfern Oval this Saturday afternoon at 1:15pm.

Tarsha Gale Cup Round 7: Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy 44 def South Sydney Rabbitohs 0

The Tarsha Gale Cup side was dealt a tough lesson on Saturday afternoon in a 44-nil defeat at Redfern Oval by the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy.

Up against the defending Premiers sitting in first place, the Red and Greens were under pressure early following two tries in the first fifteen minutes, with a sin-binning soon after leading to a 28-nil scoreline at the break.

With player depth tested throughout the season and the match, the Rabbitohs were unable to overcome their opponents, who scored a further three tries in the second stanza to run away with the result.

The Tarsha Gale Cup side turn their attention towards the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles at 11:30am on Saturday afternoon at Marcellin Fields in Maroubra.

Harold Matthews Cup Round 7: South Sydney Rabbitohs 22 def Balmain Tigers 10

The Harold Matthews side has rounded off a strong month with a win and two draws against powerhouse sides to claim a twelve-point victory over Balmain at Redfern Oval.

While it took over 20 minutes for the scoreboard to tick over, it was the young Rabbitohs to cross first through winger Charlie Mann and were quick to back up their efforts through Marshall Le Maitre for a 10-point advantage at the break.

A sin-binning right after half-time saw the Red and Green strike with quick succession as Mann bagged his second before Philip Sosaiete touched down as they took a commanding 22-nil lead.

Despite the Tigers crossing for two late tries, the result was never in doubt as the Rabbitohs continued their charge for a finals spot with two regular season matches in hand.

Lisa Fiola Cup & Under 16s Development Side

In a positive sign for the Club's next generation of talent, the Lisa Fiola Cup Under 17s Womens side and the Under 16s Mens Development side both had big victories over the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks over the weekend.

Down in South Sydney territory at Marcellin Fields in Maroubra, both teams took the field and had convincing wins over the Sharks, with the Lisa Fiola Cup side charging their way through to a convincing 52-nil demolition.

The Under 16s Development side also had a strong performance over Cronulla in their third straight victory, scoring seven tries to three with neither side partaking in goal-kicking - equating to a 28-12 win.

The prowess shown by both sides throughout their respective matches so far shows there is plenty of success for the Club's Pathways teams in future years, in what will be exciting for Rabbitohs Members and supporters alike.
